How to Prepare for AIIMS MBBS 2017

AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) is one of the elite medical institutes in India. It conducts AIIMS MBBS to fill about 700 MBBS seats in 7 AIIMS institutions across the country. The entrance test for AIIMS MBBS is scheduled for May 28, 2017. It is considered the most difficult test due to constant renewal in the syllabus and course, along with higher standard of questions. Hence, a good preparation strategy is necessary to survive the competition that this exam offers. AIIMS MBBS 2017: Syllabus and Exam Pattern

AIIMS MBBS consists of questions from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, English, Reasoning and General Knowledge. The duration of the test is 3 hours 30 minutes and it includes 200 multiple-choice questions. The questions belong from the class 11th and 12th course structure for respective subjects.

English and reasoning relatively have simple questions compared to Physics, Chemistry, and Biology module.  AIIMS tests the candidate’s capability with respect to the following factors;

  • Candidate’s understanding of subjects till class 12th
  • A candidate ability to complete the medical course successfully

Marking Scheme

The AIIMS question paper consists of 200 multiple choice questions (MCQ’s) to be completed in duration of 3 hours 30 minutes. The division of the questions according to each subject is as follows:

Every correct answer is allotted 1 mark whereas every 3 wrong answers will subtract 1 mark as per the marking scheme of AIIMS. Therefore, a candidate has to be very careful in attempting answers for each question. Any unanswered question will not attract either positive or negative marking.

AIIMS MBBS entrance test is one of the toughest exams to crack; one must plan the preparation tactfully. An AIIMS aspirant should be familiar to the exam pattern and syllabus to get a successful result.

Focus in preparing for the subjects is the most important skill that a candidate should possess to crack the examination.  Below are the key tips to help a candidate in preparing for AIIMS MBBS 2017 entrance test.

  • Know your basics very well! The course structure that a candidate studies during class 11th and 12th should be known thoroughly. A candidate should have clarity on all concepts taught in class till 12th
  • Practice as much as you can from the previous question booklets and sample papers, it will help you to get acquainted with the test format, completion time, and questions
  • Develop focus and concentration techniques as the test duration is 3 hours 30 minutes, it will help

  • After every test, revision is a key discipline.  Take important notes from the topics, study and revise them simultaneously
  • Candidates should raise doubts to their teachers or friends and get them clarified instantly without any hesitation
  • Individual topics should be given priority and responses should be evaluated accordingly. If the performance is not good, go through the syllabus again

  • It is advised not to refer too many books or publications for studying the AIIMS syllabus
  • Take as many sample tests as possible to master time and speed by attempting maximum number of questions

Mridul Sharma attributes his success to hard work, focus and determination he has put for 2 years consistently. He says, “my preparation technique was planned tactfully and I did manage to stick to my time table daily for 2 years with patience and focus. I was successfully able to revise the concepts and attempt mock tests every day to sharpen my time management, speed and comprehension skills”.

He further explained that, “My teachers and parents helped me in doubts, study schedules and at times when I was bored for revising the same concepts simultaneously. However, I never lost my excitement and kept my spirit level very high while taking mock tests. Indeed, it has helped me a lot”.

Mock tests usually demanded extra hours than routine, I dedicated those extra hours that helped to analyse my weak areas. It helped to achieve phenomenal results during mock tests itself”.

Het Shah’s explains the preparation process as below;

“One of the important steps to my success was the early determination of my goals when I was in class 8th. I worked upon the basic concepts by referring to NCERT books and revised them time and again. Visualisation of concepts is the key factor while appearing for AIIMS MBBS entrance exam and it helped me a lot as I could literally remember the pages for each subject.

Het added that, “I studied only for 6 hours per day with focus and dedication rather than exhausting for 12-13 hours. Therefore, I never recommend the concept of marathon studies as it only kills your brain functioning. I was just consistent with the number of hours that I utilised for studying every day.

Het’s suggestion to all aspirants, “Join a good coaching institute as it plays a key part in your success. Avoid marathon studies and keep consistency in your studies”.
