NEET 2017: Tips & Tricks For Organic Chemistry

Last Updated - April 01, 2017

NEET is the gateway to the India’s Most Renowned Medical Institutes for many of the aspiring candidates. Every year almost 4.7 lakh aspirants appear for the NEET exam making it the toughest of all. Getting admission in a dream college needs hard preparation. So, you have to be completely aware about the syllabus, pattern of the exam and the basic concepts of the topics while preparing.

Organic Chemistry, is a Chemistry sub discipline that deals with carbon compounds. It is that branch of Chemistry that many people hate (they say, it’s a lot of mugging up). But, once you know the basics of the subjects well, preparation can be done easily without much of mugging. Organic Chemistry shares 28% weightage of the total number of questions.

General Organic Chemistry (GOC)

GOC starts with the concepts of inductive effect, hyper conjugation, resonance & electric effect. Given below is a list of important topics and most of the questions are asked from these-

  • Identifying the Electrophile or Nucleophile Centers
  • Nomenclature
  • Isomerism
  • Resonance and Conjugation

Isomerism and Nomenclature seems to be important also form the basis of the Organic Chemistry which will be necessary while learning the conversion of one carbon compound to another while adding or removing some substance. Conversions in Organic Chemistry is the topic from which 3-4 questions always come in NEETs chemistry paper.

Tips for Organic Chemistry

If you remember a few basic things, the rest of the preparation for the subject is easy. You don’t have to mug up everything. The basic things, you need to remember are: atomic and molecular orbital, their interactions; VSEPR theory and their various applications; the VBT and MOT theories; dπ-pπ back bonding and anti-bonding orbital; LCAO in MOT theory; how pi and sigma orbital are formed; other concepts of basic bonding theory, hybridization, formal charges and how to find them.

You should also be aware of atomic and chemical properties of halogens, chalcogens and nitrogen group. The concepts of acidity, the basicity of acids and basics like Lewis type, Bronstead type, etc. and knowledge of their salts like NaCl, KCl, etc fetch you great points.

Learning the properties of AlCl3, HgCl2, concepts of charge density, atomic structure and stoichiometric knowledge is a must. And if you have some knowledge of the Kinetic Theory of Gasses, things like activation energy, how catalysts work and some basic concepts of thermodynamics, then the subject is as easy as a cakewalk.

IUPAC Nomenclature: This is one of the major hurdles while preparing Organic Chemistry. Some basic nomenclatures like aromatic rings with substitutes, fused rings & Spiro cyclic compounds, oxiranes & oxitanes and functional groups should be prepared well.

NEET 2017

IUPAC has developed a Priority System to ease the process of nomenclature. The functional group with the highest priority will be the one which gives its suffix to the name of the molecule. If a ketone is present with the alcohol then suffix “-one” would be used because ketones have higher priority for nomenclature than alcohols.
