MHTCET 2017: DTE Maharashtra introduced changes in Admission Procedure of 3 major courses

Last Updated - January 06, 2017

In a recent announcement, DTE Maharashtra announced three major changes for MBBS, Engineering and Architecture courses offered by various private and government institutes of the state. MHT-CET is a state level entrance exam conducted for admission to engineering, architecture and other allied courses offered by private and government colleges in the state of Maharashtra. The changes introduced is expected to be effective from the upcoming sessions of MHT CET 2016.

To ensure transparent and smooth process, DTE Maharashtra decided to introduce the changes in admission criteria and other processes of various courses.

DTE Maharashta introduced National Exit Test (NEXT) for MBBS Graduates. In other changes, the admission to undergraduate engineering courses is expected to be done through JEE Main for all the private and government run engineering colleges. Also, the weight of 10+2 marks as part of eligibiltiy is expected to be brought down from 50%.

The Changes introduced in the various courses are listed below.

New Test for MBBS Graduates

DTE Maharashtra has proposed a new qualifying test called National Exit Test (NEXT) for MBBS Graduates. The Test if brought into effect will replace NEET PG Exam for post-graduate medical admissions and recruitment of Doctors for Central Health Services and Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in the state.

The students and guardians have mixed reaction about the proposed changes. On the condiction of anonymity, a guardian said, “Students are going to suffer again as the government is making changes without getting the backend work done. A similar thing happened during the NEET drama.”

New Admission Criteria for Engineering

Students seeking admissions to the 15% all-India quota seats to Maharashtra’s engineering colleges will not have to appear for the state’s Common Entrance Test (CET). Candidates who have appeared for the national-level JEE Main will get preference over CET students, unlike in the previous years.

The centre is also planning to introduce a common exam (JEE) for admissions to all colleges - both private and government-run. According to Subhash Joshi, a trustee of the Science Parivar, students are left confused, he says. “When NEET was introduced, students suffered due to poor planning and coordination between the different government bodies. If JEE is to be implemented as a common exam, students should get at least two years to prepare for the new exam.” Joshi said.

Standard XII marks will not to be considered for Architecture Courses

The Council of Architecture (CoA) has introduced fresh guidelines for admissions to undergraduate courses across the state.

Firstly, the NATA declared that Std XII results were unnecessary under the new admission criteria. Earlier, Std XII results were given 50% weightage.

However, a senior official of the Directorate of Technical Education, DTE Maharashtra, Dayanand Meshram said, “Till last year, we were admitting students as per the 50-50 formula. If the CoA has prescribed any changes, we shall implement them only after the state notifies us about them.” S. B. Rege, Executive Director of Silica, a coaching institute for design courses said, “Institutes like NID and NIFT do not consider an individual’s HSC marks for admission.”

Also, NATA, which was earlier conducted across several dates, will now be conducted only a single date in one session - on April 16.
