STATE LEVEL OFFLINE TEST
The Directorate of Technical Education has introduced the “third gender category” in the application forms for Engineering and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test (CET) for the academic session 2017. Considering the fact that there are transgender people who want to pursue Engineering or Pharmacy courses, a separate third gender category has been incorporated.
“We are hoping that transgender students will benefit from this step," said Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director, DTE.
MHTCET is a state level entrance exam conducted for admission to engineering, architecture and other allied courses offered by private and government colleges in the state of Maharashtra. Earlier, individuals belonging to the transgender category had to identify themselves as either male or female in order to apply for the courses. Now, the changes have been introduced and are expected to be effective for the academic session of MHT CET 2017.
Students who wish to apply for the upcoming Maharashtra State Common Entrance test (MH-CET) conducted for undergraduate engineering and pharmacy courses will now have the option of marking themselves under the transgender (TG) category. MHTCET exam will be conducted on May 11, 2017. The MHT CET 2017 Application is available on the DTE Maharashtra official website. Candidates can apply till March 23, 2017.
Application forms for Engineering and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test (CET) will have a separate column for “Transgender” in its gender categories for the first time. The change will make it uncomplicated for transgender students, who are strained to identify themselves as male or female in order to practice technical courses.

The inclusion of the third gender in the forms is seen as a welcome step by the transgender community. This includes making the institution safe for them by having separate washroom, a strict anti-ragging policy, etc. said Laxmi Tripathi, a leading transgender activist.
Harish Iyer, an equal rights activist in Mumbai said that he has hopes that this is just the beginning and more benefits will be given to the community by the government. A third gender category will guarantee better access to higher education.
He added saying that the basic rights of the transgender people should not be overlooked. For example, proper sanitation facilities for them must be provided in the institutes.
The SC has given the verdict in support of the transgender community acknowledging that enrolment in educational institutions will be permissible to transgender and they will be provided employment on the grounds of third gender category.
Along with this addition, DTE has also made the application form of MHT CET 2017 simple for candidates so that they can fill it without any problem.
"We have also changed the timetable in such a way that students who apply to both groups — Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics would be able to finish their exams earlier than usual," said Meshram.
Every year large number of students taking all the papers because the competition in medicine is tough. As per statistics, total 1, 59,131 students appeared for the exam out of which there were more than 33,000 female students and 81,000 male students across 507 centers in the state. For the academic year 2015-16, around 7,500 seats are available for undergraduate medical courses including MBBS, BDS, and BSc Nursing conducted by state medical colleges.
