NATIONAL LEVEL ONLINE TEST
IIT JAM Mathematics is conducted for admission to M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D., Dual Degree, M.Sc.-M.Tech. etc. programmes. The IIT JAM question paper consists of 60 questions, divided amongst 3 sections. Candidates preparing for IIT JAM 2017 must be thorough in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Although each section requires rigorous practice, the same rule stands true for Mathematics as well. |Vector Calculus||Gradient, Scalar and vector fields, divergence, Scalar line integrals and vector line integrals, curl and Laplacian, Green’s, Stokes and Gauss theorems and their applications, scalar surface integrals and vector surface integrals.|
|Integral Calculus||Definite integrals and their properties, Integration as the inverse process of differentiation, Double and triple integrals, Fundamental theorem of integral calculus, change of order of integration, Calculating volumes using triple integrals and applications, Calculating surface areas and volumes using double integrals and applications.|
|Linear Algebra||Linear dependence of vectors, Vector spaces, dimension, basis, linear transformations, Range space and null space, matrix representation with respect to an ordered basis, rank-nullity theorem; determinant, Rank and inverse of a matrix, consistency conditions, solutions of systems of linear equations, Eigenvalues and eigenvectors, Symmetric, Cayley-Hamilton theorem, skew-symmetric, skew-hermitian, Hermitian, unitary and orthogonal matrices.|
|Group Theory||Abelian groups, non-abelian groups, subgroups, Group, permutation groups; scyclic groups, Normal subgroups, group homomorphism and basic concepts of quotient groups (only group theory), Lagrange’s Theorem for finite groups.|
|Real Analysis||Limit points, Interior points, closed sets, open sets, compact sets, bounded sets, completeness of R, domain of convergence, term-wise differentiation, and integration of power series, Power series (of real variable) including Taylor’s and Maclaurin’s.|
|Differential Equation||Bernoulli’s equation, Ordinary differential equations of the first order of the form y’=f(x,y), exact differential equations, , Orthogonal trajectories, integrating factor, Homogeneous differential equations-separable solutions, method of variation of parameters, Linear differential equations of second and higher order with constant coefficients, Cauchy-Euler equation.|
|Functions of one variable||Continuity, limit, differentiation, Mean value theorem, Rolle’s Theorem, Maxima and minima, Taylor’s theorem.|
|Functions of two real variables||Continuity, limit, partial derivatives, maxima, and minima differentiability. Homogeneous functions including Euler’s theorem, Method of Lagrange multipliers.|
|Sequence and series of real numbers||Convergent and divergent sequences, Sequences and series of real numbers, bounded and monotone sequences, Leibnitz test for convergence of alternating series, Cauchy sequences, Convergence criteria for sequences of real numbers, absolute and conditional convergence; ratio test, Tests of convergence for series of positive terms – comparison test, root test.|
