Central Ordinance to defer NEET by One year

Last Updated - July 29, 2016

Central government today passed an ordinance which will defer NEET examination by a year. This decision was taken in the light of protests by some state governments and medical colleges against recent Supreme Court’s ruling to implement NEET and replace all state-level medical entrance examinations.

As per the ruling of the Supreme Court, the AIPMT 2016 exam held on May 01, 2016 was to be treated as the first phase of NEET. The second phase of NEET was scheduled for July 24, 2016. However, with the ordinance of the central government, the ambiguity on NEET has increased. The ordinance still needs to be approved by the Honorable President of India Mr. Pranab Mukherjee.

The decision to introduce the ordinance was taken after Central Health Minister J P Nadda’s several meetings with state health ministers. The examination will still be applicable for those applying to Central Institutes and Private Institutes under management quota.

To oppose the ordinance, another petition has been filed in the Supreme Court. It is yet to be seen if the ordinance will come into practice or not.

The decision to introduce NEET was taken in a bid to reduce corruption in examinations held by state governments. The decision was welcomed by students who felt that often candidates who could pay a hefty donation had an edge over deserving candidates.

This year more than 6 lakh students appeared in AIPMT which was later treated as NEET phase I. Below is the list of exams which were supposed to be replaced by NEET this year:
