Last Updated - September 07, 2016

Indian Institute of Technology Council, which is also known as IIT council has decided to cut down its cut-off score to fill up the vacant seats. JEE Advance cutoff scores have been lowered in the past two years to fill the seats in country's top notch engineering institutes. This is acting as a consequence of IIT Council, which has decided to escalate the seat intake in IITs from 70,000 to 1, 00,000 for upcoming three years. In order to appear for JEE Advanced, it is mandatory for candidates to take up JEE Mains, so that they can ensure a seat at an IIT.

Analysis of the situation

1. Due to the lowing of JEE advance score, some questions has been raised on the academic quality of education of IITs.

2. The amount of difficulty level in JEE advance question paper is also discouraging the students to take up the exam.

3. Negative marking in the question paper has also resulted in the shortfall of candidates.

4. There will be no compromise in the quality of education as the teaching-learning process will remain as intense as before.

5. As according to former IIT director, government needs to improve the quality of education at school level, so that candidates appearing for JEE advanced won't require that much of relaxation.

A new category- 'Preparatory'

Last year a new category, called Preparatory has been introduced by the IITs to increase the student count for admissions. This was introduced because IITs were unable to fill the vacant seats. Basically, under preparatory category, students scoring as low as 5% marks can get an opportunity for admission through JEE advanced. Candidates under this category would be given proper grounding in gaining conceptual understanding and after getting completely trained, they get eligible to join the next batch.
