This section tests the Basic English knowledge of aspirants. The highest number of question came from Antonyms & Synonyms, and Cloze test which were easy to moderate in nature. Till 2012, 2 sets of passages with 10 questions per passage were given in both the ABS and RC sections. In 2013, though there were only 2 passages in the ABS section, the number of questions in the first ABS passage was 20 and the number of questions in the second passage was 10. In 2014, there was only 1 passage each in ABS and RC sections. From this trend, it is evident that TANCET was an exam which continues to surprise the aspirants by way of the composition of questions or by way of testing.
|Sections||Number of Questions|
This year, there were 2 passages with 10 questions each. The first passage focusing on “The Runaway Clock company considering the introduction of a new line of electronic watches” was a little bit lengthy. This passage was more about statistics. But a candidate who had prepared well would found it simple. The other passage focusing on “ABC Company, USA manufacture of computers and computer accessories has recently entered into a joint venture” was better not to attempt type, as it’s not only lengthy but also time- consuming.
In the Reading Comprehension section, like last year this time 4 passages with each passage have 5 questions. The focus of the questions was on the central theme, inference based, etc.
The surprise part in the Grammar section was that for the first time there were 5 questions based on synonyms. Besides, the words given were not of regular usage. The question based on the grammar tested the students on aspects like tenses, punctuation, verbs, adverbs, phrasal verbs, etc. A major portion of the questions were simple.
On the whole, we can classify these areas as moderately difficult. A score of 36+ marks can be considered very good.
These 2 areas together had 40 questions with 20 questions in each area.
Quantitative Aptitude part of TANCET 2017 can be considered as easier as it was last year. We can classify this year’s quantitative aptitude part as a scoring one as most of the questions were simple to understand and easy to solve. Moreover, the major chunk of the questions was from percentages, profit & loss, simple interest and compound interest. The following table gives the topic-wise classification of the questions given on Quantitative Aptitude.
|Sections||Number of Questions||Difficulty level|
|Percentages||5||Easy – Moderate|
|Profit & loss||4||Easy – Moderate|
|Time & work||1||Moderate|
|Geometry & Mensuration||1||Easy|
Data Sufficiency part of TANCET 2017 paper had a good mix of easy to moderate level questions. But the important point as mentioned earlier, the number of questions based on reasoning were more. The questions from the areas like coding and decoding, calendars, arrangements, etc. dominated the paper. Apart from these there were questions from the areas – mensuration, numbers, equations, ratio and proportions, etc. Though there were some time- consuming questions, still a majority of the questions could be answered by spending about 35-40 minutes for both Quantitative Aptitude and Data Sufficiency.
A score of around 28+ can be considered very good in these 2 areas put together.
On the whole, a test- taker scoring 64+ can definitely hope to get admission into top MBA Colleges.
