Common Questions Asked in IIFT Interview

IIFT interview is held to analyze the analytical and interpersonal skills of the candidate. IIFT interview questions range from personal to professional level. Keep in mind that most of the questions will arise from your answers. The most general and regularly asked questions are as follows:

Que: Introduce yourself?

Ans: It is the very first question of any interview. The answer to this basically sets the tone of rest of the interview. Good news is – You can earn a lot of points if this is answered right. Your next questions arises from your last answer. Don’t stop until your interviewer asks you. Prepare your TMAY (Tell Me About Yourself) for the worst time.

  • Give a brief of your education background (up to +2 is fine, your family and location, any of your hobbies etc.
  • You can also mention one of your major achievements, if it fits the circumstance.
  • Keep the answer to just about 3-4 sentences and not more than that, if it is asked for short interview.
  • No need to explain your strengths & weakness at this points (as that will definitely come along).
  • Keep the answer simple, to the point and give space and time for further questions. Do not stretch it too much.

Que: What are your strengths and weakness?

Ans:  This is another most common question in any HR interview. The idea here is to understand how much you know about yourself and how confident you are about your strengths. It is better for the candidate to:

Just stay positive. Even a simple answer like “I am a very positive person” is good enough. You can also change this as per the requirement of the interview. Knowing a bit about the profile you are being interviewed helps as well. Explaining your strength with an experience from the past is desirable here.

One should make sure while talking about their weakness try to modify the answer so that it acts like a positive answer to them.  Also, try to make your answer job related.

Que: What motivated you to join IIFT?
Ans: It is counted amongst the top 10 B-schools of India. While that was a good enough reason, I did further research and came to the conclusion that IIFT offers differentiation in form of MBA (IB) that most other premier institutes do not. The location of the B-School as well as the placement reports were enough motivation to seriously apply for IIFT.

Que: What do you think, should we compete with China or collaborate with China?
Ans: I don’t think we can compete with China in manufacturing. As per the current scenario, we should collaborate with them. Only after building our own infrastructure, we can think of perhaps competing with them.

You can elaborate your answer by talking about manufacturing in China and service sector in India.

Que: How do you think we can collaborate with China?
Ans: China can provide us with the manufacturing expertise. India-China trade is growing at nearly 3 times the pace of US-China trade, and rapid growth will likely continue. Economic ties between China and India will play a large role in one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world by 2020.

Que: If you had an option to choose between China and Japan to trade with, which one would you choose?
Ans: China. It is a bigger economy. Its population is high. So whatever it requires from India will be required in a much bigger quantity than what Japan requires. India will receive higher remittances from China. Hence I would go with China to trade with.

Que: You are a photographer. You are selling your photographs to a person outside the country. You are accepting money in a foreign currency. Is that legal?
Ans: The payment is done usually in US Dollars and it is legal.

Que: What section of trade would you put this transaction in?
Ans: This would come under International Trade.

Que: When you are selling photographs, is it a good or a service?
Ans: It depends on the situation. If I’m selling a portrait or some monument’s photograph, it would be a good. In case let’s say I’m selling it to some news agency for covering news, I would say it is a service.
