JEE Main 2018: Must for all engineering colleges

Last Updated - July 28, 2017

Following the success of NEET as one central level exam for all medical institutes, Ministry of Human Resource Development has decided to make Joint Entrance Examination (Main) mandatory for all engineering colleges from 2018. The JEE Main is expected to be a single entrance gateway to 3500 engineering colleges across the nation including deemed universities and institutes funded privately. Currently, JEE Main Scores are used by IITs, NITs, IIITs, IISc, IISER and other GFTIs & SFTIs.

Presently JEE Main is conducted for over 1150 engineering colleges catering over 1,300,000 aspirants in pen paper and computer based test. The exam is conducted in two levels viz. JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The Top 2.2 lac candidates of JEE Main All India Merit List are shortlisted by JAB (Joint Admission Board) for JEE Advanced and rest of the qualified candidates are called for Counselling providing admission to NITs and other leading engineering Institutes on merit cum preference basis.

The responsibility to conduct the examination at such a huge scale will be given to a new agency which will be decided by February 01, 2017 by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the budget meeting. Since the test will be conducted nationwide for candidates from various backgrounds, the test will be conducted in several regional languages with the rural students in mind and that too twice a year.

The institutes, however, will have the autonomy to decide whether they want to admit students only on the basis of the scores obtained by them in JEE-Main or give weightage to the class XII examinations. “It will be up to the universities and colleges to decide if they want to give 20% weightage to class XII board or 40%. They will have this autonomy. But it will be mandatory for all of them to accept the test for the purpose of admissions” the source said.

Meanwhile, the AICTE will also come up with a regulation for holding an “exit test” for final year B Tech students from 2018. The test will be conducted to evaluate their employability as well as the quality and standards of their institutes, the source added.
