JEE Main 2017 Over, “Cutoff expected to rise”, say Experts

Last Updated - April 26, 2017

JEE Main 2017 concluded on Sunday with completion of online mode of the exam. CBSE had already conducted offline exam on April 02. Over 20 lakh students across 2000 centers appeared for offline and online mode of the exam. This is the third successive year, when CBSE saw dip in the number of applications received. Nonetheless, the percentage of drop in applications is less than 2016. Last year there was 7% dip in the registration process of the exam.

Recent interviews with candidates and faculties of leading coaching institutes suggest that the level of JEE Main ranged between easy to moderate. RL Trikha, Director of FIITJEE said, “Serious candidates would not find the exam difficult to crack as the level was anything between easy to moderate. The cutoff will rise” The experts say that questions asked were more of conceptual nature rather than memory based.

Aakash Chaudhary, Director of Aakash Educational services Pvt Ltd also points out at the questions being conceptual and said, “The drift in the nature of JEE Main 2017 question is commendable. I hope to see the same pattern in JEE Advanced paper”. He further added that students confined to the NCERT and other basic textbooks might have found the exam difficult. As per reports shared by Aakash Institute, Cutoff is expected to be around 100 this year. While Rajshekhar Ratrey from said that JEE Main 2017 Cutoff would lie between 97 to 107 marks this year.

The cycle of speculation and analysis will go on till April 18, 2017, post which CBSE will publish official answer key. Overall the experts noted that there were 25 easy questions, 53 moderate, and 12 difficult questions. Mathematics was found to be the toughest of the three sections.

“Tricky Math Section, Simple formulae, lengthy calculations”

While the overall difficulty level of the paper was between easy to moderate, Mathematics of JEE Main was a bit tricky. suggests that questions were based on simple formulae but involved lengthy calculations. Others also share the same view of question breakup with 15 questions being asked from algebra sections. The trigonometry, calculus, conics, and vector algebra covered three, six, three, and three questions respectively.

Physics easier than previous years’

The Physics section of the paper was straight forward with questions asked being on easier side than the previous year’s paper. The experts said that by and large, the physics section was as expected without any element of surprise.

JEE Main Chemistry, confusing as always

In Chemistry section, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry dominated the section with a total of 22 questions out of a total of 30 questions. The remaining 8 questions where from the organic chemistry. As per experts, the section was easiest out of the three sections. Questions in chemistry this year were more of theory based and were similar to the level of previous year.

Since the analysis of the paper suggests that the level of paper was moderate, the cut-offs these are expected to rise as compared to the previous year. Last year the cut-off was 100 marks, however, this year it is expected to be on the higher side.

Candidates who appeared for offline exam on April 2, might have estimated their score with the help of JEE Main 2017 Answer Key published by various coaching institutes. While the candidates who appeared in online mode will have to wait for the opening of answer challenging window by the CBSE in order to evaluate their performance in the exam as marked response (by the candidates) along with corrected response would be displayed during that time.
