JEE MAIN 2017 Preparation Tips by Hitesh Dhawan

Last Updated - April 26, 2017

Hitesh Dhawan appeared in JEE Main 2012 and secured 80 marks.  He took Admission in Chandigarh Group of Colleges. He shares his preparation strategies with us through the interview we had with him. Here is the questionnaire:

Ques. What did you choose- Offline or Online mode for taking up the exam?

Ans. I had chosen the Offline mode for this examination. The following are some pros and cons of the same:

Pros of Offline examination:

1) Comfort: Comparatively more comfortable than sitting in front of the computer for hours.

2) Concentration: It is found that with a pen and paper the mind concentrated more than sitting in front of a computer.

Cons of Offline Examination:

1) A lot of resources required: To conduct a traditional way of examination needs a lot of resources and capital investment. A physical campus, requirement of adequate faculty and study material, seating arrangements etc. are all mandatory for the traditional method.

2) Difficulty for the physically disabled students: The physically disabled students have limited access to such traditional methods of educations and examination. Reaching the campus, writing the papers could be an obstacle for them.

3) Cannot change answer: It is difficult to change answers on the OMR paper. Most of the online exams have an option to go back to the previous question, change answers or keep a question for reviewing later.

Ans. Very High

Ques. Did you take Coaching Classes? If yes, how did they help in your story?

Ans. Yes I did take additional coaching classes. Suffice to say it that there has been what looks like a debate in India over whether a student (or the parent for that matter) should invest their time and money in the coaching institutes that provide tuition specifically for IIT-JEE examinations. Now in my opinion most of these coaching institutes have become market brands. These claim to provide the vital knowledge to crack the exam for an overwhelming tuition fee that varies from Rs.45,000-50,000 avg.(for 9th and 10th std.) and 1.5 to 2 lakhs for the core JEE 11th and 12 std. class students which I found quite expensive for a program that I found unnecessarily tough. As a fact the NCERT course is not enough to crack that kind of an exam, but also if one focuses only on the material (worksheets) provide by JEE coaching institutes chances of lacking behind in school academics elevate. Hence I chose such an institute that was affordable, it covered our school book content in the week days (monday - thursday) as well as provided core IIT-JEE training on the weekend (Friday - Sunday).

This is a Jaipur based coaching institute which goes by the name: "CEREBRUM"

This decision was not only helpful in 12th board exams but also all the other competitive examinations I gave viz IIT-JEE, RPET and AIEEE.

Lastly, I  may have not ended up as an "IIT`an" but I am satisfied with my college as it got me placed in 3 top notch companies viz Wipro, Cognizant and MindTree

College is not important, Knowledge is.

Ques. Rate the role of Coaching Institutes in cracking JEE Main

Ans. 7

Ques. How did you manage JEE Main Preparation along with your Class 12th exam?

Ans. As a student it is legitimately tough to manage the JEE preparations along with the Class 12th NCERT syllabus. In those days I discovered that the last and the most difficult question in the NCERT book was precisely the very beginner question in a worksheet provided by the coaching institutes.

So I rather went to an institute that provided NCERT classes in the weekdays and core IIT-JEE classes in the weekends (Friday to Sunday)

In that fashion I was able to gel between my school as well as the coaching training.

Here some other Tips to crack JEE MAIN 2017 Exam

Ques. What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans. Starting with my least favorite subject, Mathematics: It has been well stated many times by students that class XIth math is quite a lot tougher than that of class XIIth.

here`s my chapter vise review and tips for the syllabus:

1) SETS & Relations and Functions, Trigonometry: XIIth class begins with one of the easiest topics like these in unit 1. Packed with a whole lot of theorems and their derivations, one can grab hold of these easily with a little practice, common sense and learning of class 10th.

2)Unit 2: Algebra: This unit consists of 6 chapters out of which Permutations & combinations and sequence and series are the easier ones and they are also helpful in engineering as well as higher studies.

The Binomial theorem, Mathematical Induction and complex numbers on the other hand were quite tough for me as they came with lengthy derivations and solutions.

I took help from mostly my friends to practice those.

3)UNIT 3 - Coordinate Geometry: Practice ...practice ... and more practice with Diagrams. That`s all i can say for this time consuming but scoring unit of chapters.

4)UNIT 4- Calculus; Limits and derivatives is probably the most exasperating and difficult topic in this book for me. I took home tuition classes in addition to school and coaching institute to grab a hold on this.

5) UNIT 5- Stats and Probability: These topics are surely helpful in the long run and are comparatively easier than the above. With a little practice and observation skills this is easy to grasp.

No moving to class 12th Which has not just 1 but TWO! Mathematics Books.

The following are the topics and their marks:

1. Relations and Functions: 10 marks

- Relations and Functions: 5 marks

- Inverse Trigonometric Functions: 5 marks

2. Algebra: 13 marks

- Matrices: 8 marks

- Determinants: 5 marks

3. Calculus: 44 marks

- Continuity and Differentiability: 8 marks

- Applications of Derivatives: 10 marks

- Integration: 12 marks

- Applications of Integrals: 6 marks

- Differential Equations: 8 marks

4. Vectors and Three-dimensional Geometry: 17 marks

- Vectors: 6 marks

- Three dimensional Geometry: 11 marks

5. Linear Programming: 6 marks

6. Probability: 10 marks

Total: 100 marks

To be precise UNITS 2 and 3 are the most challenging rest all is just practice and practice.

Moving on to Chemistry which was my weakest subject as I never gelled well with the lump-sum amount of reactions which one has to learn by their specific names. To overcome my kinda "Chemo-phobia" I took assistance of extra home tuitions. The key is to memorize as many reactions as one can in a day and then try to write them the next day.

Physics on the other hand is Mathematics with a lot of reasoning. The credit for the result I got in physics goes to a famous refresher book on physics called "Pradeep`s Fundamental Physics".

I used to solve and tick mark all the right answers with a pencil and after I had solved about a 50, it was then when I flipped the pages to match with the answer key, for each wrong answer I would ask my coaching teacher for the correct solution.

Ques. What mock papers did you take?

Ans. The mock papers I gave were all provided from the coaching institute I had joined Cerebrum in Jaipur itself.

Ques. Physics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. As mentioned earlier, the credit for the result I got in physics goes to a famous refresher book on physics called "Pradeep`s Fundamental Physics".

I used to solve and tick mark all the right answers with a pencil and after I had solved about a 50, it was then when I flipped the pages to match with the answer key, for each wrong answer I would ask my coaching teacher for the correct solution.

This book strictly matches the CBSE book syllabus and coverts all topics with a vivid range of multiple choice questions that provide ample knowledge and practice to the student. Practice this book as mentioned and you ill find yourself more confident than ever before.

Ques. Chemistry: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section

Ans. For covering the entire chemistry course I would recommend Books like Dhanpat rai publications. Chemistry is one of the easy subjects of Science if you concentrate and practice consistently the topics.

What I did was instead of going through the notes provided by school and coaching classes, I took an empty notebook and started making notes of important topics and reactions for each chapter. In this way i had created my own handwritten notes which i kept for reference whenever I needed.

I would suggest:

1) Noting down the important topics for reasoning such as the ‘P block elements, d & f block elements’

2) Practice the Adsorption isotherm, Raoul’s Law, Packing fraction, Molar mass determination, as these are the topics which carry maximum questions

3) Practice solving a minimum of five numerical everyday from the chapters like Physical chemistry, Organic and Inorganic chemistry. Make note of preparing from sample papers for class 12 and CBSE chemistry past papers

4) It is always advised to prepare for the conceptual questions on Numerical as it can let you have the better understanding of the concept and strengthen the knowledge and grip on the subject.

5) Important chapters for CBSE class 12 board Chemistry exams: The last chapters; Polymers, Bio-molecules and Chemistry in Everyday are the simplest ones and carry 10 marks, and shall be prepared initially while doing last minute preparation. Prepare the topics of Organic Chemistry.

and lastly,

6) The “p-Block Elements” carries 8 marks and has to be prepared well. Surface Chemistry is one of the important part and carries at least 3-4 question and also being asked in the competitive exams.

Ques. Mathematics: Mention the Strategy and Books Followed for this section.

Ans. Mathematics is a game of practice. For this subject I strictly followed my NCERT book and practiced all the solved examples in it. I also had noted from my coaching institute.

1) Give extra attention to topics with higher marks weightage.

2) Practice long answer questions.

3) Practice questions from previous year papers, sample papers and model papers within the time frame you will have at the final exam.

4) Create a study schedule, focusing on your weak areas but still giving time to brush up on already completed topics.

5) Write out answers to get into the habit of answering questions in the required format.

6) Make an effort to write answers neatly, and pay attention to details.

7) Try to practice a variety of questions from different topics to gain speed.

8) Keep a separate list of important concepts and formulae to revise as often as possible.

9) Master the applications of the formulae.

10) If there are any doubts clear them with your teacher as soon as possible;don't leave clearing of doubts till the last day.

11) Study basic concepts from NCERT books and practice both examples and questions given in NCERT.

Ques. What are the things you would like to go back in time and change to get into a better college?

Ans. As I always believe that "College is not important, Knowledge is." In life I have been fortunate which whatever I have got and whatever decisions I have made so far but I would have definitely worked harder to get better marks and have a wider variety of colleges to choose from.

"Work hard in the silence and let your success make the Noise!"

Best of luck for your exams and life ahead.

Ques. Write some of the Preparation tips for someone who is starting 4 months before the exam?

Ans. For someone who is starting 4 months before the exam, the first and foremost tip which I would give would be to "NEVER JOIN A CRASH COURSE". Talking from my personal experience, as I did not join any institute specifically for JEE training i too found the need for a crash course a few months before the exam. I gave the fee and started the classes. Soon after a month i realized that the crash course as of no help at all (Not for me at least) reason being, firstly, they provided content that was way too tougher and different from my regular learning which I had got from my local coaching institute and school.

The teaching speed is so fast that one forgets all done in the past and is likely to get even more confused and hence more worried.

I stopped going after 1 month.

That is why I suggest to go along with your own pace, and...

1) Do not follow your friend`s way of learning.

2) At least the NCERT book syllabus must be on your tips.

3) Don`t worry about getting selected in an IIT.

4) This is the time that you must know all the basics.

5) Do not panic and drink plenty of water.

6) Spend more time with your coaching teachers, if possible request for extra doubts clearing sessions.

7) Always remember, College is not important, Knowledge is.

8) Lastly I would recommend not to join a crash course
