NATA 2017 Preparation Tips

NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) is conducted every year by National Institute of Advanced studies in Architecture, New Delhi. NATA is a well-recognized entrance exam; many state level universities consider its score for the admittance of the candidates in the architecture department.

National Institute of Advanced Studies in Architecture has announced the date of NATA 2017 for offline mode (pen-paper test) i.e. on April 16, 2017.


NATA Exam Pattern

The Exam Pattern for NATA 2017 has been changed. Now, the NATA Exam (Paper 1 & Paper 2) will be conducted in an offline mode and on the same day i.e. April 16, 2017.

NATA is conducted in two parts i.e. Paper 1- is Drawing Test and Paper 2- is General Aptitude & Mathematics Test. Drawing test and General Aptitude & Mathematics Test are pen-paper test.

Candidates will be asked 3 question in the drawing test and will get the time span of 2 hours. The General Aptitude & Mathematics Test has 60 multiple choice objective type questions in total and it has to be completed in 90 minutes. The over-all test including both papers is of 200 marks and of 3 hours’ time duration. There is no negative marking in this examination.

Paper 1:- NATA Drawing Exam

The candidates have to draw or sketch a diagram asked in 3D/ 2D and theme sketch where the visualization, symmetry and sketching ability will be tested.

Paper 2:- General Aptitude & Mathematics Test

It will be conducted in a offline mode (pen- paper based). It will involve checking the perception, imagination & observation, creativity and communication along with architectural awareness of the candidate. The answer once submitted cannot be changed later.

Note: It is mandatory for a candidate to attempt all the NATA Drawing Questions.


NATA Syllabus

The syllabus of both papers is different and limited. Candidates are instructed to put equal efforts while preparing for both the papers.

The Paper 1 i.e. the NATA Drawing section has 2 questions in total and these questions are designed to test the understanding of scale and proportion, sense of perspective drawing, sketching ability, etc.

The Paper 2 i.e. the General Aptitude & Mathematics Test has 60 objective questions in total and has questions based on Logical Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, Architectural Aptitude, Imaginative comprehension, expression and Mathematics.


How to prepare for the NATA exam?

NATA has two different papers to test the skill of the aspiring candidates at different levels. So here we are providing few important tips to follow when preparing for NATA.

  • The very first step should be to go through the NATA syllabus thoroughly and then plan out the preparation strategy and divide the time.
  • It is essential to prepare according to the prescribed NATA syllabus without wondering about unnecessary topics.
  • For the drawing test, it is advisable to practice daily and it should be kept in mind that it is not just about simple sketching but candidate has to understand the technicality behind it.
  • Try to practice the sketching on the computer as well and make yourself comfortable with the mouse/touchpad.
  • It is essential to give equal attention and time to the second paper (General Aptitude & Mathematics Test) as well and prepare it with sincerity.
  • Practice mock test paper for the General Aptitude & Mathematics Test as it will help to get the idea about the structure of the question paper and the type of questions it has.
  • Learn to manage the time. It is the key to crack any examination. Go through the paper, check the questions and divide your time equally among all, then start attempting.
  • Leave the question you get stuck on without wasting your valuable time and move on to the next question. Check out the left questions only when you have enough time left to do so.

Section wise preparation for NATA Exam

Aspirants often get confused where to start from? And what should one start with? And how to start it? Here we are providing few handful and helpful tips to follow and how to prepare for each section separately.

Paper 1- NATA Drawing Test

  • It is very important to remember that this test does not just aim to test your basic sketching skills it is something really intense.
  • This test focus primarily on testing the technical and deep knowledge of sketching like effects of light and shadows, knowledge of scales and idea about proportion, etc.
  • Start practicing from sketching simple structures and as you become efficient in doing that increase the level of complexity, start sketching complicated structures like human expressions, try to a draw live object with minute details.
  • Avoid using eraser while sketching and focus on defining the curves and cuts in bold.
  • Learn to draw neat sketches and try to be innovative.

Paper 2- General Aptitude & Mathematics Test

  • This part of the examination covers many topics such as Architectural Awareness, Logical Reasoning, Imaginative Comprehension and Expression, Creativity, Imagination, Observation, etc.
  • Candidates have to prepare very properly for this section.
  • It is advisable to keep yourself updated with the architectural awareness and should learn about the national and international architectures of prominence.
  • Be imaginative and creative in your thoughts.
  • Divide your time smartly among each topic and prepare accordingly.
  • Practice sample test papers daily to get acquaint to the exam pattern and structure of the question paper.
  • Do not start preparing any new topic a month before the commencement of NATA. Keep the last month for revision and revise each topic thoroughly.
