NATA 2017: Changes in Exam Pattern, Online Exam scrapped

Last Updated - December 20, 2016

The CoA (Council of Architecture) has made changes in the NATA Exam Pattern 2017 (National Aptitude Test of Architecture). Earlier, the Paper 2- Aesthetic Sensitivity Test was conducted through Online mode (computer based test). But, as per the CoA recent notification, the exam of NATA will be conducted through Offline mode (pen- paper based) only.

NATA 2017 is scheduled on April 16, 2017. Both of the Paper of NATA, Paper 1 -Drawing Test and Paper 2-General Aptitude & Mathematics will be conducted on the same day, unlike previous years’ trends.

Changes in NATA Exam Pattern

The CoA, conducting body of NATA, has decided to hold the NATA Exam purely through Offline Mode only. NATA is a national level entrance exam held for candidates seeking admission in Architecture programme offered by elite Institutes across India.

Given below are the major changes that the Council President of CoA has introduced:

Change 1: NATA Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be conducted in an offline mode. From the year 2016, the Paper 2- General Aptitude & Mathematics of NATA was conducted in an Online mode but now this has been stopped by the council. Both the Papers are to be held in an offline mode.

Change 2: Earlier the exam window for NATA exam was for 5 months (April to August). But, starting from NATA 2017, this has been cut down to just a single day. The candidates have to take both of the papers of NATA in a single day.

Change 3: From the year 2018, the council has decided to add Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects as a basic eligibility criteria that a candidate has to fulfill.

Reason for Changes in NATA

As per the Council President, the changes made were required so as to make the whole process feasible and easy. Given below are the major reason for the changes introduced:

  • To decrease the exam window from 5 months to just one day, will definitely make the authorities work more efficient and convenient.
  • Earlier, the whole process of NATA exam was creating a lot of practical difficulties. And also, was very time consuming as well.
  •  The 5 months’ window required a lot of work and sometimes technical issues used to pop up.
  • Another reason for the change was, as the exam had such a big timeline, there was huge possibility that the questions asked in the NATA exam might get repeated in the next NATA exam. Hence, it would be unfair for the previous candidates.

Therefore, to make the whole process easy, assessable and purely fair, the authorities have decided to adopt these changes.

New NATA Exam Pattern

NATA is conducted in two parts i.e. Paper 1- is Drawing Test and Paper 2- is General Aptitude Test & Mathematics. Both of the papers will be a pen-paper test.

Candidates will be asked 3 question in the drawing test and will get the time span of 2 hours. The General Aptitude Test & Mathematics has 40 multiple choice objective type questions in total and it has to be completed in 1 hour. The over-all test including both papers is of 200 marks and of 3 hours’ time duration. There is no negative marking in this examination.
