AILET 2018 Exam Pattern

AILET 2018 Exam Pattern details will be released by National Law University, Delhi. NLU is the only Law university that conducts its own entrance test.

  • AILET is a pen paper based exam
  • The questions are multiple- choice question type
  • Number of sections is 5 which includes English Comprehension. General Knowledge, Elementary Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Legal Aptitude
  • The exam will be conducted in English
  • Duration of the exam is 90 minutes
  • The maximum number of marks is 150 for both B.A.LL.B and LLM.

AILET(All India Law Entrance Test) is a national level exam which is held once in a year for admission to law programs. Candidates can get admission in undergraduate and postgraduate law courses like B.A., LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M. and Ph.D professional courses through this entrance exam.

AILET 2018 Exam Pattern

AILET Entrance Examination will be of 90 minutes. The maximum number of marks is 150 for both B.A.LL.B and LLM. However, the total number of Questions for B.A.LL.B is 150, while for LL.M. course; there will be 101 questions- 100 MCQ questions and 1 essay type question on law. The exam is objective type and there is no negative marking. The test paper is divided into five sections which are English, Basic Mathematics, General Knowledge, Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning. Since AILET 2018 is conducted for both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, the structure of the examination differs.  

The exam structure for B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) is as follows:

There will be 150 questions and the duration of the exam is 90 minutes.

For LL.M course, there will be total 150 marks and total 100 questions of MCQ type & 1 essay type question containing 50 marks. The duration of the examination will be 90 minutes.

For PhD course, there will be 2 papers in the entrance examination- paper I (Research Methodology) & paper II (Research Proposal Specific Paper). Paper I will contain total 100 MCQ type questions with duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. In paper II applicants will have to submit a research proposal. The research proposal should not be more than 15 pages on the topic in which applicants wish to pursue a PhD.

The research proposal should be backed my proper readings and references. The PhD seats at NLU generally do not exceed 10. So the competition is fierce. Candidates will be informed about the availability of Phd seats on the official website


AILET 2018 Marking Scheme

For objective questions, one mark will be awarded for each correct answer. There will be no negative marking in the entrance exam. As per the marking policy of AILET 2018, if a candidate has responded a question with two options, it’ll be regarded wrongly attempted and no marks will be awarded or deducted for the same.

No marks will be awarded for questions left unanswered or non-attempted.


Syllabus AILET 2018

There is no prescribed syllabus for AILET entrance exam. However, based on the general exam pattern of previous years, candidates should cover the following topics. The most important thing about AILET is balancing all the topics. Aspirants should not overlook any section.

For Mathematics Section

AILET 2018 entrance exam will judge candidates’ knowledge of elementary maths. So for this section, revise Maths syllabus upto class Xth and specially study Number System.  

Similar to BA LLB entrance, there is no prescribed syllabus for LLM course. But the official website lists the topics one must cover for the exam

The official website will also inform candidates of the topic for subjective essay-type question in the exam.  It will be based on any one of the aforementioned subject areas only.

Apart from the books, it is strongly suggested to practice previous year’s papers and mock tests as many as possible. It will help manage time in the exam and also inform one of the difficulty levels.

Therefore, referring to the books and practicing the sample papers and mock tests, is an important part of preparing for AILET 2018 Entrance Examination.


Important Instructions for AILET 2018

The following instructions are to be followed by all examinees on the exam day:

  • Candidates should not carry personal items including mobile phones, pager, electronic watches, calculators or any other electronic gadgets to the exam centre.
  • Candidates will only be allowed to appear for NLU Delhi law exam as long as they are carrying their admit card along with a valid id proof, blue/ black ball point pen, pencil, eraser and photographs.
  • Carrying any unauthorized documents or articles inside the exam hall may debar the candidate from taking the test.
  • Candidates should visit the exam centre of AILET 2018 a day before, so that they have a fair idea about the location, direction, traffic and exact time it will take to reach the centre.
  • Candidates should reach the centre an hour before the exam is scheduled. 
  • Candidates who will be reach the exam centre of AILET an hour before the commencement of exam can utilize the time in checking the seating arrangement and cross-verifying their candidature details including name, roll number and date of birth as provided on the notice board at the centre.
  • Candidates should keep the admit card carefully.
  • Admit card will not only ensure their entry to the hall but also act as a proof of their candidature in the exam. It may be inspected by the invigilator.
  • Most importantly, stay calm and cool and focus on solving maximum questions accurately.
