MAT Feb 2017 Paper Analysis

The MAT 2017 Exam was successfully conducted on February 05, 2017 in a single session for admission to MBA/PGDM programs offered by more than 400 post graduate Management institutes across India. Conducted by All India Management Association in pen paper based test, the exam had 200 questions in total for candidates to solve.

The Paper was divided among five sections, viz. Language Comprehension, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Mathematical Skills and Indian & Global Environment.  The overall difficulty level of the paper was moderate. However, the Data Analysis & Sufficiency section was a bit tricky with few surprise questions in the section.

Overall Difficulty Level

Overall difficulty level of MAT Feb 2017 was moderate as mentioned earlier. Each Section had 40 questions with 1(Scaled to 5) marks allotted to them. Each incorrect response would cost them 0.25(Scaled to 1.25) marks. The Maximum Raw Score of MAT Feb 2017 is 200(Scaled to 800) and score out of which percentile score will be awarded is 800.

As depicted in the table given below. The toughest section of all was undoubtedly Data Analysis and Sufficiency followed by Indian and Global Environment. However, candidates could make up what they had lost in these sections, in Language, Intelligence and Mathematic Skills.

Language Comprehension

There section comprised 40 questions from various topics. The section saw more questions upon jumbled words and picking odd one out, fill in the blanks, vocabulary words and synonyms-antonyms. The short comprehension passages were followed by 4 questions related to the comprehension. Other questions ranged from jumbled sentences, basic grammar corrections and main idea of paragraphs. However, few questions had moderate difficulty level and could be answered well in time. Let’s look at the weightage of the section.

Intelligence & Critical Reasoning

The section put more focus on Analytical & logical reasoning with little attention to Critical reasoning. The Questions were from distribution, calendar, assertions & reasoning, analogies, blood relations, direction, series, statements. The section was a comparatively lengthy with moderate difficulty. Data Analysis and Sufficiency

There were maximum questions on MAT 2017 data interpretation. The major part of the section covered charts, graphs, and comparison questions. The time management was therefore a major factor to solve the section smartly.

While the Data Interpretation section occupied more than 50%, rest of the section dealt data sufficiency and data comparison. Let’s look at the topic breakup of the section.

Mathematical Skills

Around 18 questions in the section comprised Arithmetic, Percentages, Time & Work, Average, Percentage and Profit & Loss. The questions were time consuming with moderate level of difficult. Other sections covered Venn diagrams, Equations, Ratio & Proportion and Variation, Geometry & Mensuration, Permutation, Combinations and Probability.

The difficulty level of the section was moderate and candidates with decent level of preparation could attempt good amount of questions in the section. Let’s look at the topic weightage of the section.

The average duration of the section was 15 minutes. The questions were based on conventional Knowledge, current affairs, Indian and world economics. However, this section is qualifying in nature and is not considered for preparing merit list of the qualified candidates. Candidates could answer this section well within the time limit.
