CAT 2016 Marks vs Percentile

Last Updated - December 14, 2016

The CAT 2016 was conducted for 195,000 candidates on Dec 04, 2016 in two slots. 83% of the total 232,343 registered candidates appeared for the test. The Candidates will be shortlisted for around 3500 seats in IIMs thus bringing down the success ratio to 0.02%. The competition in CAT has always been close but this year, it is even more difficult to make your way to the elite IIMs.

According to the Paper Analysis by some of the leading CAT Coaching Centres, the Verbal Ability Section was easier than the last year with only a few surprises. The Quantitative Ability Section was at par with the previous year trends. The LRDI Section was the toughest of three and is expected to be the most difficult paper of CAT LRDI in previous 5 years.

Owing to the Seven year high registrations and difficult LRDI Section, the CAT Cutoff is expected to go low this year. The Result will be announced in the second week of January, 2017. All the shortlisted candidates will be called for further rounds of GD/PI.

Your CAT Attempts & Expected Percentile

Yes, the correlation is extremely overstated. The far deeper correlation is likely to be between accuracy and percentile. The number of attempts is merely the most visible metric. Every year, there are lots of students who attempt 65% of the total questions and end up with less than 85th percentile.

Every year a large number of students appear in the CAT examination. They attempt lots of questions but few come up with a good percentile because in CAT accuracy matters. Every college requires CAT 2016 Score. Below we are providing the correlation between the number of attempts and percentile of the accurate answers.

How is the CAT percentile calculated?

After appearing in a fully revamped CAT 2016 exam on December 4, 2016, the test takers have been registering on many websites to get a glimpse of their percentile.

A percentile is a statistical measure of distribution. Calculation of percentile basically depends on the number of test takers. Total 1.95 lakh candidates out of 2,32,434 registered applicants appeared for the test.

Percentile rank is equated on the basis of percentage score that falls below a certain specified score. With the total scale scores arranged in rank order from the lowest to highest in 100 equally sized groups, a table with the total scale scores to percentile ranks will be created. After the scores are identified and arranged, high scoring candidate’s name will be identified from the top among high scorers and subsequent list of low scorers.

The calculation of CAT percentile can be done using a simple formula, which is as follow

Formula = {1 – (Rank/No. of test takers)} x 100%

CAT Center 2016 has declared “In order to ensure fairness and equity in comparison of performances of the candidates across different test sessions, the scores of the candidates shall be subjected to a process of Normalization.”

The normalized scores of CAT thus obtained for all the students across all sessions (in a particular section or the total) will then be used to calculate the sectional and overall percentiles.

Below we are providing the percentile data from leading CAT coaching experts for CAT 2016 candidates.
