NDA 2017 PATTERN & SYLLABUS
NATIONAL LEVEL OFFLINE TEST
NDA is a national level competitive exam for filling different vacancies in National Defense Academy and Naval Academy. The first phase of NDA was conducted on April 23, 2017 while NDA II is scheduled to take place in the September 10, 2017.
Candidates appearing for the NDA Exam are advised to go through the NDA exam pattern before commencing with their preparation, in order to secure a good score. NDA consists of two papers, Mathematics in paper 1 and General Ability & English in paper 2. The maximum marks for both the papers are 900. The cutoff marks required to crack the NDA Exam are generally around 350 to 360.
UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) in their official notification has specified the number of questions and marking scheme for both the papers. NDA exam is divided into 2 sections namely Mathematics and General Ability Test. Both the papers will be of 2 hours 30 minutes. Paper 1 of mathematics will be of 300 marks and Paper 2 will be of 600 marks divided between English (200) and General Knowledge (400). All the questions will be in MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) format. The questions in the Mathematics section will be based on the Class 11th and 12th syllabus while the syllabus for Paper 2 (English and General Knowledge) would be also based on a similar level.

For every correct answer in mathematics section candidates will get 2.5 marks and 0.83 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer. The total maximum marks for paper 1 are 300. For Paper 2 i.e. English and General Knowledge section, candidates will get 4 marks for a correct answer and 1.33 marks will be reduced for a wrong answer. English section is of 200 marks while General Ability is of 400 marks. Candidates will be given 2 hours 30 minutes to solve each of the paper. There will be time interval between both the papers.
After the NDA written exam, the subsequent stage is SSB Interview. It is a 5 day long process to judge candidates’ personality and Intelligence. It is conducted by SSB (Service selection board). For this candidates should log on SSB official website to check NDA Interview center and date. They can apply on the official sites of Army, Navy and Air Force:-
The selection process goes on for 5 days which include various tests like personality test, SRT (Situation Reaction Test), WRT (Word Association Test). The entire process of selection is discussed in detail below:-
Day 1- Screening Test (Stage 1)
This stage includes 2 tests namely Intelligence Test and picture perception test. In intelligence Test they are asked Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning questions. It is followed up by 2nd test which is picture perception test. In this candidates are shown a picture slide for 10 seconds. On the basis of which they are asked different questions such as which character appeared first, Last character on the screen, How many characters are shown and many more.
This test is again followed up by Group Discussion Test which is generally based on the first character shown during Picture Perfection Test. The candidates have to narrate a story based on this character for 1 minute.
Day 2, 3 and 4– Psychology Test (Stage 2)
On second day candidates faces many tests such as TAT (Thematic Apperception Test), WAT (Word Association Test), GTO (Group Testing Officers.). TAT is similar to PPT i.e, candidates are shown 12 slides out of which last one is blank. Candidates have to write stories on the basis of these slides. The last one is a blank, Candidates have to write own story in it. In WAT 60 words are shown on the screen for 15 seconds.
This test is done to check the candidate’s proficiency in English language. They have to write the meaning of the word shown on the screen. The GTO test will include Group discussion, Group Planning, progressive group tasks, half group tasks, Individual Obstacles etc.
NDA Paper-2 comprises 2 papers viz. Mathematics and General Ability Test. Candidates can check the important topics and number of questions asked in these 2 sections from below mentioned sections on the basis of previous year trends:-
The first paper is of Mathematics. All the questions are of objective type (MCQs). Candidates are given 2 hours 30 minutes to solve it. The Maths paper generally consist of class 11 and 12th Maths syllabus. More weightage is given on topics such as Sets, Sequence and Series,

Paper-2 General Mental Ability
Paper 2 will be of General Mental Ability Test. This paper will be divided into 2 parts English and General Science. Candidates will get 2 hours 30 minute to solve this section. The English part will include topics like Synonyms, Antonyms, Para jumbles. Mentioned below is topic wise analysis which can help them for the NDA Exam preparation.
