KVPY 2017 Exam Pattern

KVPY is an objective type paper scheduled in the first week of November, 2017. KVPY Exam will be conducted in offline mode i.e. written test. The KVPY Question Paper will be in two languages English & Hindi that are required to be completed in 3 hours.

The number of questions vary in each section and for every stream. The candidates have to attempt all the questions in Part I and Part II for SA Stream. Candidates applying for SB/SX stream have to attempt any three sections in Part I and any two sections in Part II. 

KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana) is a scholarship programme which is initiated and conducted by IISc at the national level to encourage the aspiring students of Basic Science, Engineering, and Medicine to pursue a research career in these fields. KVPY test is basically taken by students of classes 11th & 12th from science stream and 1st year students of Basic Science, Medicine, and Engineering.


KVPY Exam Pattern

KVPY test will be held in Offline mode i.e. pen and paper based examination. The duration of the KVPY Exam is 3 hours conducted at various allocated KVPY Test Centres. The KVPY question paper will be objective type with questions asked in both English and Hindi language. KVPY Question paper has two sections i.e. PART I & PART II. There are 4 parts in each section and the question paper will be a total of 100 marks.

KVPY question paper is designed for two streams separately i.e. Stream SA and Stream SB/SX. Candidates have to attempt each question in Stream SA whereas in Stream SB/SX candidates will have a choice to attempt any three sections in PART I and any two sections in PART II.

KVPY Exam Pattern for SA Stream

KVPY Questions Paper for SA Stream contains objective type questions. There are a total of 60 questions in Part I of KVPY Exam for SA Stream provided there are 15 questions in all the four sections. Part II consists of 40 questions with 10 questions in each section.

It is mandatory to attempt all the questions from each section in the kVPY Exam for SA Stream. Candidate will be rewarded 1 mark for each correct answer and 0.25 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer in Part I. Candidate will get 2 marks for each correct answer and 0.50 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer in Part II. The total weightage of the exam is 100 marks.

KVPY Exam Pattern for SB/SX Stream

The number of questions in Part I is 20 questions in each section and Part II comprises 10 questions from each subject. Part I has multiple choice objective type questions whereas Part II will have descriptive type questions.

The total weightage of the exam is 100 marks wherein candidates have to attempt any three sections in Part I and any two sections in Part II of the exam. The SB/SX stream have similar subjects and similar KVPY Exam Pattern which is tabulated below:

KVPY Syllabus

Candidates who are pursuing undergraduate courses in B.Sc. / B.Math. / M.S. / B.Tech./B.S./ B.Stat. / Int. M.Sc. are eligible to appear in KVPY Examination. There is no pre-defined syllabus for KVPY Exam hence candidates are tested as per the syllabus of Class 11th/ 12th and first year’s syllabus of B.Sc./B.Math. / M.Sc. / M.S. / B.Tech./B.S./ B.Stat. / Int. M.Sc.  KVPY exam has two parts Part I & Part II and these parts are further divided into 4 sections for which the syllabus is given below.  

Important Topics for Physics Section

Candidates are asked questions mostly from the Class XI CBSE Syllabus of Physics in SA Stream. Candidates must be well versed with topics such as Mechanics, Ray Optics and Electromagnetism. Basic Class X knowledge about electromagnetism will be helpful. Topics such as Thermodynamics, SHM and waves must be studied properly from Class XI NCERT Book and other references.

For SB Stream, candidates must prepare important topics from class XI syllabus given above and few important topics from Class XII syllabus as well. The important topics from Class XII syllabus of Physics are Electrostatics, magnetism, optics rotational dynamics, fluidity waves and oscillations. Give extra emphasis on preparation of these topics, however all the topics are important.

Candidates are asked questions based on the fundamentals of physics and not the subjective knowledge about the subject. Candidate must think about the practical connotations of the question before concluding and answering it. 

Important Topics for Mathematics Section

Mathematics is the most tricky and important sections in the KVPY Exam. It is an optional subject for candidates applying under SB/SX stream and a mandatory subject for SA Stream candidates. For SA Stream, candidates must prepare well probability, algebra, mensuration and trignometry.

The important topics for SB Stream candidates to clear the mathematics section are 2D and 3D geometry and Calculus. Probability and Binomial Theorem hold an equal importance in the exam.

Important Topics for Biology Section

Candidates who apply for SB/SX Stream have a choice to opt for this section if they are a medical student in Class XI and XII. The SA Stream candidates have to attempt it as a mandatory section in the exam. The preparation from the NCERT books is the key to score well in the KVPY Exam.

The consideraably important topic for the biology section as per the analysis is the Biomolecules (DNA, Proteins). There are maximum number of questions from Molecular genetics, human disease and Biotechnology. 

Important Topics for Chemistry Section

Candidates are asked questions based on Class X syllabus and basic syllabus of Class XI in the SA Stream exam for KVPY. The important chemistry topics in the exam are Chemical Reactions, Metals and Non-Metals, Periodic Classification of Elements, Carbon Compounds, Acids, Bases and Salts, Basic Concepts of Chemistry, Thermodynamics, States of Matter: Gases and Liquids, Classification of Elements & Periodicity in Properties, Environmental Chemistry.

The important chemistry topics for preparation to give the exam under SX Stream are Surface Chemistry, States of Matter: Gases and Liquids, Metals and Non-Metals, Carbon compounds, Basic Concepts of Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Classification of Elements & Periodicity in Properties, Chemical Reactions, Environmental Chemistry, Solid State, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Isolation of Elements, Periodic Classification of Elements.

KVPY Preparation Tips for Interview
