In any scenario of JoSAA counselling, if multiple students of the same category have the same rank, and the number of seats have been filled, there is provision for seats being supernumerary. The admission to those students will be accomplished by extending the number of seats for that particular rank.

JoSAA 2017 Seat Allocation in IITs and ISMs:

Different set of rules have been devised for seat allocation of different category students to specific courses. The details of those courses and student category are mentioned below:

  1. Foreign CANDIDATES
  • The candidates with foreign tag will be considered under GEN category
  • They must be in the CRL and fulfill all the requirements of eligibility for the GEN category.
  • Seats allocated to them will have the provision of being supernumerary.
  • The number of supernumerary seats will be 10% of the total number of seats.
  • The foreign candidates will not be considered under JoSAA counselling for admission to NITs, IIEST, IIITs (Triple-I-Ts) and Other-GFTIs.
  1.  PREPARATORY COURSES
  • The OPEN-PwD seats that remain unfilled will be allocated to applicants in the CRL-PwD preparatory rank list in case no more applicants in the CRL-PwD rank list have opted for it.
  • The OBC-NCL-PwD seats that remain unfilled will be allocated to applicants in the OBC-NCL-PwD preparatory rank list in case no more applicants in the OBC-NCL-PwD rank list have opted for it.
  • The SC-PwD seats that remain unfilled will be allocated to applicants in the SC-PwD preparatory rank list in case no more applicants in the SC-PwD rank list have opted for it.

Number of Rounds

There are 4 rounds in JoSAA for seat allocation process for academic programs offered by Institutes under JoSAA 2017.

Reporting to Allotted Institute

After completion the above steps, the next process is that, candidates must report to the allotted institute immediately in person before the deadline. At the time of reporting, candidates must fill the option for ‘freeze’, ‘slide’ or ‘float’ the choice of academic program.

Question. What are the meaning of the terms ‘Freeze’, ‘Float’ and ‘Slide’?

Ans. These three terms are used at the time of reporting centre. It allows the candidates to either retain the seat allocated or to opt for a change in seat as per candidate’s preference in any of the institutes or in the same institute in which the seat is allocated. All the three options are described below.

Freeze: Freeze means that a candidate accepts the offered seats and he is satisfied with the allotted academic programmes. And he/ she will not participate in the further rounds of counseling for seat allotment, and such candidate will not be considered in subsequent rounds of admission.

Floating: Floating means that a candidate accept the offered seats and if he/ she get better/higher preference in any Institute for an academic program, he/ she will accept it. Else, he/ she will continue with the currently accepted academic program. Such candidates will be considered in subsequent rounds of admission.

Sliding: Candidate accepts the offered seats and if he/ she get better/higher preference in the same Institute for an academic program, he/ she will accept it. Such candidates will be considered in subsequent rounds of admission.

Candidates getting 1st allotment at any NITs or IIITs or other GFTIs must report at the nearest CSAB reporting centre with fee deposit e-challan and documents for verification and confirmation of provisional admission.

Important Point: Edit Personal Data During or After Registration in JoSAA 2017

Candidates can edit only two options like- gender and state of eligibility. Other personal information cannot be modified during or after JOSAA 2017 registration. The rest of the information regarding the applicants will be taken from the JEE (Main) 2017 database.

Latest change in Seat Allotment Process

The candidates who qualify JEE Main and JEE Advanced are allowed to withdraw their seats in various rounds of  JoSAA 2017 counseling process. As per the latest changes in the JEE Main Seat Allotment, the candidates can surrender the seats allotted to them during JoSAA 2017. The introduction  of  seat withdrawal option by the JoSAA officials will be significant in reduction of number of unfilled seats at IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs .

Now the students will be allowed to surrender their seat, if the seat allotted is lower on their preference list. Last year, there was no withdrawal option in JoSAA , a seat once allotted to a candidate  would not  be allotted to any other candidate .The JoSAA officials may give fresh guidelines on June 24, 2017 and commence the counseling process from the same day for IIT, NIT, IIIT ad GFTI admissions.

Earlier the admissions at IITs were closed after third round of seat allotment and the fourth round was conducted for admissions in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. A special round of counseling was also conducted by CSAB for the reserved seats but for the year 2017-18, the IITs are pondering to schedule four or more rounds of counseling for admissions. the Authority of JoSAA are planning to commence the counseling process in the last week of June. The step taken by JoSAA of not providing seat withdrawal option to the candidates  faced a huge criticism last year.
