JEE Main 2017 Exam Pattern

JEE Main consists of 2 papers primarily – Paper-1 is conducted for B. E. /B. Tech. aspirants while Paper-2  is conducted for B. Arch. /B. Planning. aspirants. You can appear for either 1 paper or for both the papers depending on choice of course you want to take admission into. JEE Main is one of the top notch entrance exam held for admission to UG engineering programs offered by various premierEngineering Institutions like NITs, IIITs and other Government funded Institutions.

Both the papers will be conducted on the same day. Also, you can choose your mode of examination for Paper 1, i.e. online or pen-paper based mode. However for Paper 2 there is no option, you have to attempt it in pen paper mode only. The total marks allotted for Paper I is 360 while total marks allotted for Paper 2 is 390

Exam is scheduled for April 2, 2017 in pen-paper based mode and for April 8 and 9, 2017 in computer based test mode. All the candidates are required to carry requisite documents on the day of examination.

JEE Mains Result is expected to be announced in the final week of April-2017 based on which top 2 lakh All India Rank holders would be shortlisted to appear for JEE Advanced. The main highlights of JEE Main exam Pattern is indicated below for reference of all the candidates.

JEE Main 2017 Exam Pattern

Exam Pattern for Paper-1(B.E./B.Tech)

This will be conducted for students who aspire to pursue engineering programmes. In this there will be 90 questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with 30 questions from each subject. It will be 3 hours duration exam. For every correct answer you will be given 4 marks and 1 mark will be  deducted for every wrong answer .You have to prepare class 11 and class 12  CBSE syllabus for it.

Following are highlights of JEE Main Paper 1- 

  • Mode of Exam- Paper 1 will be conducted in both online and offline modes. 
  • Number of questions – The total number of questions will be 90 with 30 questions from each subject (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics)
  • Maximum Marks – The maximum marks you can score is 360
  • Marks for correct answer – You will be awarded 4 marks for every correct answer.
  • Marks for incorrect answer1 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • For No answer- Zero mark will be deducted for no answer  i.e. if you want to skip any question you can do it without a fear of  mark deduction .

JEE Main 2017 Exam Pattern for Paper 2(B.Arch/B.Plan)

It will be conducted for B.Arch/B.Planning desiring students and it will also cover 3 subjects- Mathematics, Aptitude Test and Drawing test. It will be 3 hours duration exam. Maths section will have 30 objective questions compiling 120 marks, Aptitude Section will consist of 50 questions of 200 marks(as expected) and In drawing test there will be 2 questions for 70 marks on topics Memory and 2D design. For attempting this section you will be given a separate drawing sheet attached with the answer sheet. It will be conducted in paper-pen mode only and in later half on the exam day.

Following are highlights of JEE Main 2017 Paper 2- 

  • Mode of Exam-Paper 2 will be conducted in pen paper based mode only
  • Number of Questions- There will be total 82 questions to be attempted in 3 hours
  • Marking Scheme- There will be objective type questions in Mathematics and Aptitude section with 4 marks for each correct response while drawing test will comprise 2 questions having weightage of 70 marks
  • Negative marking-Negative marking will be applicable only to objective type questions. 1 mark will be deducted for each wrong response.

JEE Main 2017 Exam Schedule 

As JEE Main is one of the most run after exam by class 12th students held at National level, the exam is scheduled to held on 3 days-April 3, 2017(Offline Mode) and April 9-10, 2017 in online mode, Mentioned  below is the schedule for JEE Main 2017 for both modes:-

Offline Examination:

As per students comfortability and to facilitate their efficiency in attempting the questions CBSE provides the provision that they can go either for a pen paper based test an online test, however this choice is only applicable for Paper-1, For Paper-2 students have to appear in offline i.e. paper pen mode only

Online Mode for Paper-1 only

For paper-1 you have a choice to whether appear for online mode or offline mode , in online mode you be made to sit in front of a computer and questions will be displayed on the screen and you have to attempt it using the virtual keypad and mouse provided. For making you comfortable about how to appear for a computer based test , CBSE will provide a facility of mock tests in month of December 2016 online in which students can get familiar about how the questions will appear , how to answer them etc.

JEE Main 2017 Mode of Examination

You can attempt Paper-1 in 2 modes i.e. Offline (Pen and Paper Based Examination) mode and Online (Computer Based Examination) mode but for Paper-2 it will be conducted only in Pen and Paper based mode.You have to indicate mode of examination during the application process. No queries regarding this will be entertained further. Note that you can change your mode of examination from offline to online for paper during the form correction period from January 21, 2017 -January 31, 2017

Choice and Medium of Question Papers

Usually you have 2 options for attempting the question i.e. English or Hindi, However For some states CBSE provides the option of attempting the question paper in their regional languages like in Gujarat, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli candidates have the option to chose Gujarati as their language of paper ,Similarly students belonging to Maharashtra can choose Marathi and Urdu as their mediu of question paper.For rest of the cities they can chos only English and Hindi as their medium of paper.

Important Guidelines for JEE Main 2017 aspirants

CBSE has laid down some guidelines for the students  appearing for the entrance and you all are advised to follow the rules and regulations religiously for smooth functioning of the exam. In case you fail to abide any of the rule you will be straightway disqualified from the exam.

Here we are providing you all the common guidelines for students to follow and special guidelines for both Computer based Test and Pen Paper Based Test.

Common guidelines for both Computer Based Test and Pen Paper Based Test

  • Reach your exam center 30 minutes prior the examination and make sure to carry your admit card with you.
  • You have to carry a copy of document according to the following applicable criteria with you:-

  • You have to sit  only on the seats allotted you, if you fail to do so you will be straightway disqualify by CBSE
  • You have to ensure that the question paper available to you on the computer is as per your choice/medium ,No queries further will be entertained afterwards
  • Use of Electronic Devices is strictly not allowed:-You are not allowed to carry any textual materials with you to the exam center such as Calculators, Docu pen, Slide Rules, Doc tables, Electronic watches, any printed or written material. Along with the answersheets in pen paper mode and also in online rough sheets will be provided to you for all the calculations work and you have to written this rough sheet back to the invigilator after the exam.
  • In case of any query or emergency/technical assistance contact the superintendent in the room. Note that no student will be allowed to leave the room before the examination without superintendent’s permission

Guidelines for pen paper based Test

  • Test will be held on same day and same time slot  as written on the admit card
  • You have to bring your own ball point pen, Board will not supply you any stationary
  • For paper-2 you have to bring your pencils, crayons and other stuff required to attempt questions in drawing test.
  • Use of Calculator and electronic devices is not allowed in JEE Main exam.
  • You will be allowed to open the seal of the paper 5 minutesbefore starting of the exam.
  • You have to write your particulars with black/blue ball point pen on both sides of the answer sheet.
  • Test will be of 3 hours duration and will contain 3 sections Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for Paper 1 with 90 questions from each section having equal weightage and For Paper 2 there will be 3 sections-Mathematics, Aptitude test and Drawing Test.
  • A signal will be given to you when your exam will begin, when half time will be over and when exam will be just about to get over
  • answer sheet, Verify your serial number with serial number on your answer sheet. In case of any variation contact your invigilator.
  • You have to sign your attendance sheet twice, first immediately when exam will begin and secondly when you will hand over your answer sheet to the invigilator

Guidelines for Computer Based Test(B.E./B.Tech. only)

  • For making you familiar with computer based test mock tests will be available in the month of December 2015 on the JEE Main official website
  • Test will start on the exact date and time slot mentioned on your admit card
  • Test will be of 3 hours duration and will contain 90 questions from physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with 30 questions from each subject. Every question will have 4 alternatives and 1 correct answer. Each correct answer will fetch you 4 marks and ¼ mark will be reduced for every wrong answer.
  • You will be provided with a rough sheet for all calculations and writing work and at the end of the exam along with your OMR sheet you have to return back your rough sheet also
  • You are not allowed to carry any electronic devices, mobile phone, eatables with you to the exam center


JEE Main 2017 Special Provisions for PwD(Person with disability) Candidates

CBSE has made a special provision for PwD candidates that if any student have more than 40% disability then he/she will be provided with a scribe/reader as per the candidate’s demand. A scribe is one who transcribes an answer in the exam for a student who have difficulty in producing clear texts or diagrams due to many reasons, such candidates will be introduced to their scribe one day prior the exam to develop the comfortability of the scribe and the student. A reader will be allotted for the students who have sight related problems.All the candidates falling in this category will be given an extra 1 hour to complete the exam.

You have to carry you PwD Certificate along with other documents and admit to the exam hall on the D-Day.

Do’s and Don’ts in the Exam Centres

All the students appearing for JEE Main exam have to maintain the decorum of the exam center failing to which you will be subjected to disqualification. Whenever  you appear for any exam whether at school level or outside  there are some Do’s and Don’ts that you have to follow, In JEE Main the Do’s and Don’ts at exam center are as follows:-

What do at the Exam Center?

You will get the venue and date for your exam center on your JEE Main Admit Cardwhich can be downloaded from the have to official website, Also you carry this admit card and a copy of final marksheet if you haven’t applied for any further improvement exam or if you have applied for improvement paper then you have to carry a copy of admit card/hall  ticket of the improvement exam  to the exam center

You are advised to reach the exam center 30 minutes before the exam and to sit on the appropriate seats as per your roll numbers. Sign the attendance sheet provided to you at the beginning of the exam by the invigilator/superintendent and in the end of exam.

Ensure that you check the answer sheets thoroughly such as number of pages in the answer sheet should match the number written on the top of the answer sheet there is no misprint, in case of any discrepancies contact your invigilator immediately.

What Not Do at the Exam Center

  • Make sure you do not get late in reaching the exam center and forget to carry the documents to the center
  • Once you enter the exam center you are not allowed to leave the examination before the exam is over. Do not carry any eatables, tea, coffee to the exam hall.
  • Do not change your room or seat by your own , you have to sit on the seats according to your roll numbers.
  • Do not carry any written or printed material, calculation devices like calculator, doc tables with you , if found you exam will be cancelled.
  • Smoking is strictly prohibited in the examination center

JEE Main 2017 Syllabus

JEE Main is conducted for class 12 students for admission in B.E./B.Tech and B.Arch/B.Plan Programmes and Question paper will cover class 11 and class 12syllabus as prescribed by CBSE .For Paper-1,the syllabus will cover 3 subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with 30 questions from each topic. You are advised to first go thoroughly the NCERT books for these subjects, then switch over to other competitive books,. For Physics section you have to prepare 20 chapters, for Chemistry there 25 chapters and for Maths you have to prepare 15 chapters of class 11 and class 12.
