IIT JAM Syllabus, Exam Pattern

IIT JAM Exam Pattern will have 7 test papers, namely: Biological Sciences (BL), Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS) and Physics (PH). All seven test papers will be objective in nature.

IIT JAM 2017 will be conducted on February 12, 2017 (Sunday). The papers will be carried out in two slots. All the test papers of IIT JAM 2017 will be carried online, as a Computer Based Test. The Organizing Committee of JAM 2017 is IIT Delhi.The total duration for JAM will be 180 minutes. The system will automatically close the exam after 3 hours.

A student can appear in either one or two paper(s) but he/she should ensure that the two exams are not scheduled in the same slot. For candidates appearing in 2nd paper need to pay additional application fee for taking the second test. All the seven tests will be objective type, with three different patterns.

IIT JAM 2017 Exam Sessions

Candidates can apply for more than one exam by paying an additional fee. However, it must be kept in mind that both the exams do not take place in the same time slot. Following is the test schedule of IIT JAM 2017 to be held on Febuary 12, 2017

IIT JAM 2017 Exam Pattern

The duration of the JAM exam is of 3 hours. The language of the exam will be English. Total number of questions in the question paper will be 60 carrying 100 marks in total. The entire paper will be divided into 3 sections: A, B and C.

The description of the three types of questions which will appear in IIT JAM 2017 are given below:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)- Each MCQ has four options, out of which only one answer is correct.
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ)- Each MSQ has four options just like MCQs. But the only difference is that MSQ may have more than one option as its correct answer.
  • Numeric Answer Type (NAT)- There are no choices in these questions. These questions will just have on real number as their answer. The candidate will have to enter the correct number using the virtual keyboard provided on the screen.

IIT JAM 2017 Marking Scheme

There are three types of questions in the IIT paper which are divided into three sections. There are different marking schemes for every section. Following is the marking scheme of IIT JAM 2017.

Section A

  • There is only one correct answer in the given 4 options.
  • Questions in Section A will have four choices of which only one will be correct.
  • There is a negative marking for every wrong answer.

  • Questions are marked for 1 as well as 2 marks.
  • Question 1 to 10 are marked for 1 marks. While Question 11 to 30 are marked for 2 marks.
  • Questions unanswered in all the sections will be marked 0, that is, no mark will be awarded for questions not attempted. For Section A, there will be negative marking for every question answered wrong. For questions carrying 1 mark, 1/3rd mark will be deducted. For questions carrying 2 marks, 2/3rd marks will be deducted for every question answered wrong.

Section B

  • Sections B has Multiple Select Questions. They will have four choices of which one or more answer(s) will be correct.
  • There is no negative marking in this section.
  • All the questions in this section consists two marks.
  • There is no partial marking for correct answers.

Section C

  • The questions will be numerical based where answer is a signed real number, to be entered using virtual numeric keypad on the monitor. There will be no choices and answer should be typed using virtual numeric keypad.
  • Questions in this section do not have options.
  • There is no negative marking in this section.
  • Questions are for one or two marks.

There is No Negative Marking in Section B and Section C. For Section B, there will be No Partial Marking for partially correct answer.

IIT JAM has 12 IITs and IISc Bangalore as their participating colleges. These colleges accept IIT JAM score for admission in their M.Sc and Ph.D courses. However, there are other colleges which may accept IIT JAM Score as their admission criteria.

IIT JAM 2017 Exam Hall Instructions

Candidates must keep in mind the exam hall instructions given below. It is important to follow them.

  • Candidates should not bring a scientific calculator as Online Virtual Calculatorwill be present on the test screen. You can use the online virtual calculator in case you need.
  • Candidates wishing to appear in two exams must check the schedule. The two exams must not clash in the same slot.
  • Use of mobile phone or electronic device is strictly not allowed.
  • Scribble pad will be provided for rough work.
  • At the end of 3 hours, the computer will close the exam automatically.
  • Use of unfair mean will lead to cancellation of JAM 2017 exam and disqualification of the candidate from IIT JAM Exam in future.
