IES Examination Pattern, Syllabus

IES exam pattern describes the complete question paper pattern, weightage and the time duration for each of the exam paper. A candidate must clear all the 3 rounds of IES Exam to be able to get recruited. Final selection of candidates will be made on their performance in all three rounds given below:

Stage 1: IES Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)

Stage 2: IES Main Examination (Conventional Type)

Stage 3: IES Personality Test

The paper may appear tough as sometimes the questions in the IES main exam are lengthy. IES 2017 syllabus for each of the stream is different. The IES 2017 syllabus for general knowledge and general engineering aptitude test is same for all the streams.

Every year thousands of applicants appear for UPSC IES. The marks distribution for the paper 1 of IES is 300+200 (500 marks). The marks distribution for paper 2 IES is 300+300 (600 marks). The IES marking scheme for the personality test is not defined.

The personality test evaluates the candidates on the general parameters. The IES exam syllabus is taken from the B.Tech course of various streams. Some topics may appear difficult but one must prepare all the topics thoroughly to clear the IES exam.  


IES 2017 Exam Pattern for Prelims

IES exam pattern for preliminary examination is same for all the streams in the IES exam. A candidate must check the IES exam pattern for prelims before preparing for IES 2017. It is as follows:

1. Civil Engineering: The preliminary exam for the IES Civil branch comprises of 2 subjects. The general knowledge exam and civil engineering subject exam. IES exam pattern for civil paper has total weight of 500 marks. The distribution of the following is given here:

2. Mechanical Engineering: IES exam pattern for mechanical is the same as the IES civil exam. The IES mechanical exam requires the candidate to clear the basic preliminary subject based exam and the general aptitude exam. The preliminary exam for the IES Mechanical branch also comprises of 2 subjects. The general knowledge exam and mechanical engineering subject exam. 3. Electrical Engineering: IES exam pattern for electrical contains 2 papers. The paper 1 is to test the general knowledge and general engineering aptitude and paper 2 is to test the subject knowledge. The details of hours and marks distribution are as follows:

4. Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering: The IES ECE exam pattern for preliminary round is designed to test the knowledge of the general studies and the subject knowledge. IES 2017 Exam Pattern for Mains 

IES Mains examination is the stage 2 of IES exam. IES main exam pattern is common to all the streams. The main subjects change with the stream. The paper pattern for main IES exam only involves the change in the type of questions. The brief overview of the IES exam pattern for mains exam is as follows:

Civil Engineering- A candidate has to clear two sets of papers. The papers are designed for the subjects defined in the IES 2017 syllabus for the civil stream. The course for both paper 1 and paper 2 are different. In the following table, the IES exam pattern for Mains (Civil Engineering) is represented:

Mechanical Engineering- IES main exam for mechanical engineering is designed such that the candidate lose more marks in the IES exam. The mechanical stream exam sometimes appears lengthy. The standards are defined and formulas are given in the questions paper. The candidates must sure that they attempt questions in a proper format.

IES Electronics and Telecommunication Paper is designed from the IES electronics and telecommunication syllabus. The syllabus is same as it was in preliminary IES exam. The candidate has same marks for both the exam. The candidate must thus prepare well for both the papers which are part of the main IES ECE exam.

IES 2017 Syllabus for Preliminary Exam 

IES Preliminary Exam has Paper 1- General Studies and Engineering Aptitude exam which tests the general knowledge/ general awareness. The other is testing the engineering aptitude. IES syllabus for thegeneral studies is as follows:

  1. Current issues of National and International importance relating to Social, Economic and Industrial Development
  2. Engineering Aptitude covering Logical reasoning and Analytical ability
  3. Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis
  4. General Principles of Design, Drawing, Importance of Safety
  5. Standards and Quality practices in production, construction, maintenance and services
  6. Basics of Energy and Environment: Conservation, environmental pollution and degradation, Climate Change, Environmental impact
  7. Basics of Project Management
  8. Basics of Material Science and Engineering
  9. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) based tools and their applications in Engineering such as networking, e-governance and technology based education
  10. Ethics and values in engineering profession.

The Paper 2 of the IES exam (preliminary) has the weightage of 300 marks.The IES syllabus for the engineering aptitude varies with the stream. The streams are Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. The subjects are exactly same to the subjects of the main examination in respective fields.

IES 2017 Syllabus for Mains Exam 

The IES main examination is designed separately for each of the 4 streams of IES. The IES main examination contains 2 papers. Each of the main subject paper is of 300 marks. The candidate has to clear both the papers to qualify the IES 2017. The main 4 streams are as follows:

IES 2017 Personality Test 

IES personality test is the last stage of the IES exam. The candidates who have cleared the IES exam stage 1 and IES exam stage 2 will only qualify for the Personality Test. A total of 200 marks are awarded for the IES Personality Test. The candidates will be tested on following skills:

  • Initiative and intellectual curiosity: The candidate may be given a group to lead or may be asked to describe his response in a virtual scenario.
  • Tact and other social qualities: The ability to adapt to the dynamic changes taking socially in the work environment.
  • Mental and physical energy: The response to the various stressors in the environment. The ability to cope up without being exhausted is checked. This generally requires the candidate to work in a scenario presented to him/her.
  • Powers of practical application: The ability to demonstrate practical skills or present the information through practical demonstration of the event. This is designed to check the innovation or creativity.
  • Integrity of character: The ability to bind by the rules or the moral code of character keeping in mind the best possible outcome with minimum losses.

IES 2017 Marking Scheme

The IES marking scheme is same for all the subjects but different for each stage. The marking scheme is defined for Preliminary IES, Engineering Service Examination (main stream (Stage 2)) and Personality Test (stage3). The questions papers set by UPSC for IES exam are in English language only. The maximum marks of stage 1 or preliminary exam are 500 marks.

The IES marking scheme for objective IES exam or IES preliminary exam is as follows:

  1. The negative marking scheme will be practiced only in the objective IES exam.
  2. The candidate will lose 1/3 or 0.33 marks for every wrong marked answer.
  3. In case 2 options are encircled by the candidate in any answer, such questions will be considered incorrect and the candidate will lose 0.33 marks on the same.
  4. In case no options are marked by the candidate in the OMR sheet such questions will not be evaluated.
  5. The damaged or torn answer sheets will not be evaluated.
  6. The candidate must not write the name on the answer sheet. The name written answer sheets will not be considered.

The candidates who clear the stage 1 or IES preliminary exam will be qualified for the IES engineering main exam. The IES main exam is the subjective exam. The candidate has to write two papers which are of 300 marks each. The maximum marks defined for stage 2 or IES main exam is 600.The candidates whose writing is not good or it is illegible will lose additional 5 % marks. These marks and marking scheme are defined by the UPSC IES exam committee.

The IES exam stage 3 is defined as the personality test stage. This is depending on the confidence of the candidate, ability to present information, communication skills and other parts of personality like the ability to lead, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application and integrity of character.


IES 2017 OMR Sheet 

The IES OMR sheet has to be filled by the candidate only after the instructions have been given by the invigilator. The rule of filling the bubbles with a BLACK BALLPOINT pen only must be remembered. The OMR sheets not filled with black ball point pen will not be evaluated. The IES result of such candidates will not be displayed. The candidates have to fill the following details first on receiving the OMR sheet:

  1. All encoding has to be done in black pen only.
  2. Center code: This is given on the IES admit card. For example Delhi center code 09.
  3. Enter the roll number in the field asked and fill the corresponding bubbles with the black pen. Do not omit zeros by your personal choice. Example: 081276 is your roll number on the IES admit card then you must write it properly as “081276” and NOT “81276”. The absence of zero may make you lose your candidature.

IES 2017 Exam Pattern

  1. Enter the details of the subject along with the subject code. For example general studies paper has code 99 then put in the field asked as “99” and fill the corresponding bubbles in the same columns.

IES 2017 Exam Pattern

  1. Put the code of the test book series. The test book series has codes A, B, C and D.
  2. You do not have to encode the name of the center.

How To Mark Answers In OMR Sheet? 

The IES exam pattern also is designed to give details about how to fill the IES exam answer sheet. The answer sheet requires the candidate color the bubbles properly. The candidate must please check the rules below for filling the OMR sheet:

  1. As soon as the answer sheets are received by the applicant he/she must check for the code on the OMR sheet.
  2. The applicant must get the answer sheet changed if the IES OMR sheet is missing the code. The test book series will contain the code A, B, C and D.
  3. Fill the details of the center code, subject and subject code.
  4. Following these details fill the IES roll number provided in the IES admit card on the OMR sheet.
  5. Do not erase any zero’s while marking any field or roll number on the OMR sheet.
  6. The bubbles have to be colored with the black ball pen.
  7. The name of the IES test center must not be encoded.
  8. The answers must be marked in the OMR sheet only after the IES subject code, test book series and other relevant details have been filled.
  9. The candidates have to check the question number and the answers have to be marked by coloring the bubbles properly. The bubbles have to be colored with a BLACK PEN only. 
  10. Just mark one answer to each question. The options are printed for each of the questions separately.
