IELTS Registration Process

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a test that aims to evaluate the English language skills of the test taker. The test is jointly conducted by University of Cambridge ESOL, the British Council and IDP. Those wishing to pursue their studies or careers, in a country where English is the spoken language, are required to take IELTS exam.

There are 3 reasons for candidates to take the IELTS – for study, for work and for migration purposes. For instance, if a person wishes to gain a job in an English-speaking nation, he will need to take the IELTS examto prove his language skills. Another circumstance, under which it is necessary to take IELTS, is if someone wishes to settle permanently in an English-speaking nation.

Steps to Take The IELTS Test

The entire process of taking the IELTS exam is divided into 5 broad steps, as explained below:

  • Visit www.ielts.org for details regarding the IELTS test centres.
  • Download the IELTS application form from the mentioned link.
  • Fill the applications form correctly, follwed by providing a recent clear photograph and identity number.
  • Submit the form to the nearest centre along with the application fee.
  • Confirmation of test date and time will be provided by the test centre.
  • Report to the test venue on time along with necessary documents.
  • IELTS Results will be available 13 days after the test taking.

IELTS Exam Dates

The applicant is given the option to select the IELTS exam dates according to their convenience. There are several dates available for test taking throughout the year. There are 42 locations all over India where the British Council conducts IELTS exam.

There are two websites that the applicant can visit for the purpose of booking a test date for IELTS exam – the British Council website and the IELTS official website. Steps to be followed for this purpose through each website are provided below.

  • Click on “Register for IELTS”.
  • Provide the test date, test city and version of exam in the left-hand box and click on “Submit”.

IELTS Registration

Before registering for IELTS, the candidates must check the availability of test dates. There are 42 test centres in India that the candidate can choose from. It must be kept in mind that once a test centre has been fully booked then there will be no remaining sessions, and it will not be shown in the online registration system.

IELTS Exam Fee and Mode of Payment

The amount that needs to be paid as the IELTS exam feeis INR 11,100up until the September 30, 2016. After 1st October 2016, the fee will be increased to INR 11,300.

There are two ways to register for IELTS – online and offline - and hence two ways to make the fee payment. To pay the IELTS registration feeonline, the applicant can choose either a credit card or a debit card. Visa, Visa electron and Master Card are also accepted.

If the applicant has opted for offline registration process, he will need to pay the fee using the offline mode. The IELTS registration fee offline can be done either by cash or a demand draft. If making cash payment, candidate should visit an ICICI bank branch and use the ICICI payment slip. To pay using a demand draft, the applicant must draw it in favour of “the British Council” and make it payable at New Delhi.

Registration

The IELTS Registrationcan be done both online and offline. For offline process, the application form would have to be downloaded from the official IELTS website, filled out correctly and then sent to the nearest test centre along with the fee.

In order to register online, the candidate can visit either one of the IELTS website or the British Council website. Both of them provide access to the registration portal. It must be noted that for Indian users, when accessing the registration system from the IELTS website, the applicant will be automatically redirected to the British Council website.

  • Visit the link – www.ielts.org to download the application form.
  • Take a print out of the form and fill all the details carefully.
  • Choose a test date online by visiting the official website.
  • Make fee payment in either cash or by demand draft.

For e.g., in case the applicant is a student, he should fill 7 as the level and since the sector is education, he should choose 08 as the sector.

Enclosures to be sent with the form

The documents to be sent with the application form vary according to the mode of application and mode of fee payment. The details can be found below:

  1. In case of online application and fee payment using a Credit or Debit card, there are
  • No documents required
  1. In case of online application and fee payment by Cash or Demand Draft, the following documents must be sent with the application form:
  • A copy of the IELTS Test application acknowledgement (to be received after registering online)
  • Proof of fee payment made (either the demand draft or the ‘British Council copy’ of the ICICI payment slip).
  1. In case of offline application and fee payment by Cash or Demand Draft, the following documents must be sent with the application form:
  • The completed IELTS application form
  • Proof of fee payment made (either the demand draft or the ‘British Council copy’ of the ICICI payment slip)

Post registration details

All candidates who have registered online will be sent an email confirming the receipt of payment and containing details regarding how to access the free IELTS online preparation course, called “Road to IELTS”.The applicant’s IELTS test date will be confirmed once the email has been received.

Such candidates who have registered by the offline mode (post / courier) will receive their confirmation receipt and access details for the preparation material via email within 7 days of receipt of their documents. Applicant must be careful to preserve this email as it would contain important information.

Fee Payment options

The IELTS registration fee can be paid in two ways and the candidate is free to opt for the payment method that he finds convenient. The methods are discussed below:

  1. Online Mode

Either a credit card or a debit card can be used for this purpose. Visa, Visa electron and Master Card are the ones that are recognised.

  1. Offline Mode

The fee can alternatively be paid offline either by cash or by a Demand Draft. For the purpose of cash payment, the applicant must visit an ICICI bank branch and use the ICICI payment slip. If paying by the option of DD, it must be drawn in the favour of “British Council” and be payable at New Delhi.

Cancelling The IELTS and Requesting a Transfer

If the candidate wishes to cancel his scheduled IELTS exam, he must keep in mind that he will be charged the full test fee if this is done within 5 weeks of the test date. Transfer of application fee will be granted only if the applicant manages to produce appropriate medical evidence, within 5 days of the test date.

In order to apply for cancellation and postponement of test date, the candidate must fil out the “Request for Postponement or Cancellation”form. After filling out the form, the candidate will need to send it by post or courier to the following address:

The form must be sent up to five weeks prior to theIELTS test date. Any form received after this deadline will be accepted, only after retaining the complete application fee. No amount of the registration fee will be transferred to the candidate. Also, there is a cancellation fee that will be charged as well when processing the cancellation request.

Cancellation of IELTS test date 

The cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund of the candidate’s application fee. Once the request has been made by the applicant, it may take about 2 weeks' time to process it. In case of refund for an online payment, the refund amount will be made to the card from which the original payment was received.

The candidate must attach the original payment receipt of test fee along with the form. The cancellation fee varies as given below:

  • INR 2750 for IELTS tests till September 30, 2016
  • INR 2825 for IELTS test dates after October 1, 2016
  • INR 4650 for IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration
  • INR 3480 for IELTS Life Skills A1 or IELTS Life Skills B1

Postponement of IELTS Test Date 

If the candidate wishes to postpone his IELTS test date to a later time, he will be required to pay a postponement fee. This must be done through a DD. The Demand Draft must be drawn in favour of 'British Council', payable at New Delhi, and sent along with the postponement application form.

The candidate must attach a copy of the payment receipt of test fee along with the form. The postponement fee differs as given below:

  • INR 2750 for IELTS tests till September 30, 2016
  • INR 2825 for IELTS test dates after October 1, 2016
  • INR 4650 for IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration
  • INR 3480 for IELTS Life Skills A1 or IELTS Life Skills B1
