IAS 2017 Selection Process

IAS exam (Indian Administrative Services) is conducted to invite candidates who wish to seek employment at All India Services such as I.A.S, I.P.S, I.F.S, I.R.S and various other Group A and Group B services. IAS Exam is held in three different stages- Preliminary Examination, Mains examination and Interview. On the basis of the marks obtained in the IAS Exam. Mains examination and Interview, a final merit list prepared with the name of the candidates who are eligible for recruitment provided their documents are also according to the requirement.

Selection of candidates is based on the cut offs released by the commission after preliminary examination and mains examination. Candidate who qualifies in the preliminary examination can sit for UPSC mains examination. Similarly, a cut off is released according to which qualified candidates are called for the interview session hence, preparation of merit list takes place while excluding marks scored in preliminary examination.


IAS Exam Results

IAS Prelims 2017 Exam will be conducted on June 18, 2017. The IAS Results for the same will be declared by the commission on August 2017. Candidates who will be able to score more than the cut off set by the commission will proceed to the mains examination.

Now, IAS 2016 selection process is ongoing. Candidates eagerly waiting for IAS Mains 2017 result can check their result at official website. The results for IAS mains 2016 exam will be declared in February, 2017. There will be another cut off released by the commission according to which candidates will be called for interview session in March, 2017. Results for interview session will be declared in May, 2017. The final merit list will comprise of the marks scored in the Mains examination and interview. No inclusion of preliminary examination marks will be done. Candidate can download results by following the steps given below:

  • Go to the official website of UPSC official website and look for the link ‘IAS exam results’ in case of preliminary exam results, ‘IAS Examination results’ for mains results and to get final merit list, candidate shall look for ‘IAS exam Final Merit List’.
  • For Preliminary Examination Results, candidate must enter their roll number, date of birth, service applied for and finally confirm the random image code given. Click on ‘submit’ button and the result for IAS 2017 Preliminary Examination.
  • To get results for IAS Mains Examination, candidate who will be registered can only have access to the result. Candidate will be asked to enter login ID (Roll Number) and Password and click on ‘Login’ button to complete the process.
  • Finally, candidate can have access to the final merit list as it will be uploaded as a pdf file on the official website.

IAS Exam Preliminary Examination

Preliminary examination of IAS Exam will be conducted in the month of June 18, 2017. There are two compulsory papers in Preliminary Examination, Paper I (General Studies) and Paper II (Civil Services Aptitude Test). Preliminary examination is held for two hours and total marks for the same is 200 marks for each paper. IAS Question Paper of preliminary examination is set in both English and Hindi language.

Candidates will proceed to the Mains examination after the commission releases cut off to qualify Preliminary Examination. The criterion of evaluation in preliminary examination to determine cut off will be on the basis of minimum qualifying marks of 33 % in General Studies Paper-II of Preliminary Examination and total qualifying marks of General Studies Paper-I of Preliminary Examination.

Cut off for Mains Examination of IAS Exam 2017 will be released on the basis of aggregate marks obtained in Paper-I out of 200 marks and marks obtained in Paper-II out of 200 marks. The maximum marks on English Language and Comprehension will be deducted. Commission will not take into consideration marks scored in preliminary examination while preparing Final Merit List.


IAS Exam Mains examination

To sit for IAS mains examination, candidate is required to qualify the Preliminary examination. Those who successfully clear the preliminary examination by qualifying to the cut off set by the UPSC shall compete with candidate’s double to the number of vacancies available.

Mains examination shall consist of 7 papers and an interview session which will be counted for merit calculation. Each paper will be of 3 hours’ duration. Total marks for each paper will be 250 marks. Following table elaborates the details regarding UPSC mains examination pattern:

Those who qualify the mains examination as per the cut off set by the commission shall be called for the interview session or personality test which will also be considered for merit calculation. Candidate will be selected on the basis of the career records and some general questions pertaining to the job profile will be asked to test candidate’s knowledge and personality traits. Marks scored in the mains examination and interview session will be determining factors of selection of the candidate, no qualifying list or cut off will be released after this.


IAS Exam Interview

The most important stage that must be cleared in order to get recruited in All India Services is that of the Personality test. Candidates who qualify the mains examination are called to face a board of judges from the Union Public Services Commission who judge him/her on the basis of several factors. These factors include mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity along with some technical skills required in the job profile that has been selected by the candidate.

The technique of the interview is not that of a strict cross‐examination but of natural, directed and purposive conversation which intends to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate. Interview session is conducted for 275 marks and no qualifying marks have been enlisted to clear it by the commission. The skills presented in the career profile must be shown while in front of the board members to secure good marks in personality test. Final selection will be based on Mains examination and Interview session marks combined together.


IAS Exam Final Merit List

Final merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the mains examination and personality test. Candidates will be allotted to the various Services according to their merit and preferences. The final merit list will be out in the month of May, 2017. Marks scored in Preliminary examination will be excluded while preparing Final Merit List.
