HPCET 2017 Engineering Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The Himachal Pradesh Technical University, Hamirpur (HPTU) conducts the HPCET (Himachal Pradesh Common Entrance Test) for admission to B.Tech./B. Pharmacy/B. Pharmacy (Ayurveda), M.Tech, M. Pharmacy, MCA and MBA courses in colleges affiliated to HPTU.

The HPCET 2017 Engineering Exam will be held on May 14, 2017 and that of HPCET 2017 M.Tech Engineering Exam will be held on May 15, 2017.The HPCET 2017 Exam will be conducted in English language and in pen and paper based mode.

The HPCET 2017 Exam Pattern will consist of multiple choice questions which have to be attempted in a duration of 3 hours. The candidates must have detailed knowledge about the HPCET 2017 syllabus in order to excel in the HPCET 2017 examination.

HPCET 2017 Exam Pattern for B.Tech Examination 

The HPCET 2017 exam pattern for B. Tech. paper will be divided into three sections of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

The time duration for the exam is 3 hours. There will be 150 multiple choice questions in the paper and the total marks of the exam is 300. The candidates can skip a question or can leave it unmarked and no marks will be awarded or deducted for such question. However, candidates cannot mark two answers for the same question and doing so will render the question invalid.

HPCET 2017 Exam Pattern for M.Tech Examination 

The HPCET 2017 Exam Pattern for M. Tech. entrance test will be divided into three sections of Aptitude Test, Civil Engg. /Electrical Engg. /Electronics &Comm. Engg. /Computer Science & Engg./ Mechanical Engg and Mathematics.

The time duration for the exam is 3 hours. There will 100 multiple choice questions in the paper and the total marks of the exam is 200.

HPCET 2017 Marking Scheme 

The marking scheme for HPCET 2017 entrance test for both B. Tech. and M. Tech. admissions is similar. Each question will carry marks. For every wrong entry there will be deduction of 0.5 marks. Only one entry for each question will be entertained. If a candidate makes multiple markings for the same question then the question will be rendered invalid. For M. Tech HPCET 2017 entrance test, the total paper will be of 200 marks whereas for that of B. Tech entrance test, the total marks will be 300.


HPCET 2017 Syllabus for B.Tech Examination 

Candidates appearing for HPCET 2017 B.Tech have to attempt Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics questions in the Question paper. The section wise HPCET 2017 syllabus of the subjects is as follows:

Section A- Physics 

The Physics section has two parts A and B. Section A contains Theory Part having 80% weightage, while Section - B contains Practical Component (Experimental Skills) having 20% weightage. The syllabus for Theory is as follows:

The syllabus for experimental skill in the Physics section has been provided below. Candidates must be familiar with the basic approach and observations on the experiments and activities listed below:

  • Vernier callipers- its use to measure internal and external diameter and depth of a vessel.
  • Screw gauge- its use to determine thickness/ diameter of thin sheet wire.
  • Simple pendulum- dissipation of energy by plotting a graph between square of amplitude and time.
  • Metre Scale- mass of a given object by principle of moments.
  • Young’s modulus of elasticity of the material of a metallic wire.
  • Surface tension of water by capillary rise and effect of detergents.
  • Co-efficient of Viscosity of a given viscous liquid by measuring terminal velocity of a given spherical body.
  • Plotting a cooling curve for the relationship between the temperature of a hot body and time.
  • Speed of sound in air at room temperature using a resonance tube.
  • Specific heat capacity of a given solid and liquid by method of mixtures.
  • Resistivity of the material of a given wire using meter bridge.
  • Resistance of a given wire using Ohm’s Law
  • Potentiometer-Comparison of emf of two primary cells and determination of internal resistance of a cell.
  • Resistance and figure of merit of a galvanometer by half deflection method.
  • Focal length of Convex mirror, Concave mirror
  • Convex lens using parallax method.
  • Plot of angle of deviation vs angle of incidence for a triangular prism.
  • Refractive index of a glass slab using a travelling microscope.
  • Characteristics curves of a p-n junction diode in forward and reverse bias.
  • Characteristics curves of a Zener diode and finding reverse break down voltage.
  • Characteristics curves of a transistor and finding current gain and voltage gain.
  • Identification of Diode, LED, Transistor, IC, Resistor, and Capacitor from mixed collection if such items.
  • Use of multimeter

Section B Chemistry 

The Chemistry section of the HPCET 2017 B.Tech paper is divided into three parts: Part A of Physical chemistry, Part B of Inorganic Chemistry and Part C of Organic Chemistry. The HPCET 2017 syllabus of all parts has been provided below. The topics included in Physical Chemistry are as follows:
