GATE Eligibility Criteria 2018

GATE Eligibility Criteria 2018 mandates a candidate to hold a Bachelor’s Degree from a recoganised university/ institute in order to apply for the exam. The eligibility criteria for GATE is defined by Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT Guwahati). It is important to go through the standards defined before filling GATE Application Form.

Listed below are GATE 2018 Eligibility Highlights:

  • Candidates in the Final year are also eligible to apply for GATE 2018. However, they will be offered final admission only after they clear their examination.
  • There is no minimum or maximum age limit prescribed to appear for the examination.
  • No minimum percentage is specified for appearing in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
  • There is no attempt limit to appear or apply for the exam.

Candidates satisfying the eligibility criteria can proceed towards GATE Registration. The registration window will become functional from September 01, 2017 to October 05, 2017. One must ensure to pay the requisite exam fee and upload documents to be able to appear in GATE. The exam is scheduled from February 03 to February 11, 2018.

The detailed description for each program is mentioned below. It is notified that a candidate is allowed to appear in only one paper of GATE.


Qualifying Degree wise GATE Eligibility

Eligibility for B. Tech/ B. Pharm. and B.E. Students

  • Passed a Bachelor degree (4 years after 10+2 or 3years after Diploma in Engineering/ Technology) in Engineering/ Technology or currently in the final year of degree.
  • You must have passed bachelor degree in 2018

Eligibility for B. Arch Students

  • Passed a 5years Bachelor degree in Architecture or currently in the final year of degree
  • You must have passed bachelor degree in 2018

Eligibility for B.Sc. Students

  • Passed a Bachelor's degree in Science (Post-Diploma/ 4years after 10+2) or currently appearing (4thYear) of degree
  • You must have passed bachelor degree in 2018

Eligibility for M.Sc., MA, MCA students

  • Passed a Master’s degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent or currently appearing in the final year
  • You must have passed Bachelor Degree in 2018

Integrated M.E./M.Tech (Post B.Sc.) Post-B.Sc.

  • Passed a 4years Integrated Master’s degree programs in Engineering/ Technology or are appearing in 2nd/3rd/4th year are also eligible
  • You must have passed bachelor degree in 2019

Eligibility for Dual Degree (Integrated) M.E./M.Tech. after Diploma

  • Passed a 5years Integrated Master’s degree program or Dual Degree program in Engineering /Technology or currently appearing in the  4th or 5th year
  • You must have passed bachelor degree in 2018

Eligibility for Integrated M.Sc. Integrated B.S./M.S. 

  • Passed Integrated M.Sc. or 5years Integrated B.S.- M.S. program or currently appearing in the final year
  • You must have passed bachelor degree in 2018

Eligibility for Students having Degree from professional Society Examination (equivalent to B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch) for ex. AIME or AMICE

  • Passed a B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch. or equivalent examinations, of Professional Societies, recognized by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by Institution of Engineers-India, AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers-India)
  • Completed Section A or equivalent of such professional courses 

Note: Professional Certificate/ Provisional Certificate/ Course Completion/ Membership Certificate issued by the Society or Institute Copy of Mark sheet for Section “A”

Eligibility for International Applicants

GATE 2018 enables the candidates from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates to seek admissions to M.Tech or PhD courses in various IITs and IISc. The all India exam will be conducted in the mentioned countries for applicants from these nationalities. International candidates are required to satisfy the following Eligibility Criteria:

  • The candidates must have completed Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Master’s Degree in a relevant Science Subject.
  • The candidates appearing for the final year of the degree course are also eligible.

Eligibility for Candidates Having Backlog

Candidates who have backlogs (arrears/ failed subjects) in any paper of the qualifying degree or have appeared in the final year/ semester examination in 2018 should do the following either

  • Submit a copy of any one of the marks sheets of the final year

OR

  • Have to obtain a declaration from their Principal along with the signature and seal beforehand and upload the same during the online submission of the application form

Important Notes:

  • If a candidate has passed any one of the qualifying examination as given above in 2016 or earlier then such candidates have to submit the course completion certificate/degree certificate/membership certificate/professional certificate and provisional certificate issued by the society or institute.
  • If any candidate is expected to complete any one of the qualifying degree in 2018 or later as given above then such candidate has to submit a certificate from Principal or a copy of marks card for section A of AMIE.

Certificate from Principal: Candidates who have to submit a certificate from their college Principal have to obtain one from his/her institution beforehand and upload the same during the online submission of the application form.

Documents for Reserved Category

Candidates will require the following certificates for each and every category for GATE exam. Here we will provide you the certificate form and format link.

  • SC/ ST certificate (click here for Format and Form)
  • OBC certificate is not required GATE. This is required only while taking the admission using the GATE 2018 score
  • PWD Certificate if he/ she has at least 40% disability as per government rules
  • Certificate from Principle (for use as the eligibility certificate only for final year or backlog candidates)

GATE 2018 – Frequently Asked Questions

Ques: What is the minimum percentage of pass required for GATE exam?

Ans.  There is no specified pass percentage for GATE 2018. Candidates must have passed the specified Qualifying exam or must be in the final year of their qualifying degree or as specified above.

Ques: I belong to SC/ ST category. What certificate should I attach or produce?

Ans.  Please follow the format and form of SC/ST category and apply ASAP.

Ques: I have completed my degree in 2015 but i have a backlog. Can I appear for GATE 2018?

Ans.  No. Candidates who are in their final year in 2016 and with backlogs are allowed this.

Ques: I am in the 3rd year of my engineering? Can I appear for GATE 2018?

Ans.  No. You are not eligible. Only students in their final year can appear or students who have completed their qualifying degree.

Ques: Who can claim a PwD category?

Ans.  Candidates who have at least 40 percentage of disability as per government notification, comes under PwD category and can claim.

Ques: Is there a restriction on number of attempts in GATE 2018?

Ans.  No, there is no restriction on umber of attempts

Ques: I am studying B.Sc. (Agriculture). It is a four year course. Am I eligible for GATE 2018?

Ans.  Yes. You are eligible. Three year courses are not eligible for GATE.

Ques: Is there any special reservations or relaxation for SC/ST category candidates?

Ans.  Yes there is reservation for SC/ ST/ NC-OBC categories but it is not determined as what is the criterion for it. But generally it follows the reservation criteria as laid by Government of India that is:  SC – 15%, ST – 7.5% and OBC – 27%

Ques: Is there any age limit for appearing in GATE exam? Are reserved category candidates provided age relaxation?

Ans.  For taking GATE exam there is no age limit either minimum or maximum, students of 16 years of age can also give exam and older than 28 can also give exam. So, given this there is no requirement of age relaxation for reserved category candidates.
