CLAT 2017 Application form

Common Law Admission Test- CLAT, is a national level law entrance test and conducted rotationally by 18 NLUs for admission to UG (LLB) and PG (LLM) level courses. The Official Notification for CLAT 2017 Exam Dates released on December 25, 2016. Candidates who fulfill CLAT Eligibility criteria can apply online for the exam before March 31, 2017. 

The CLAT Form can be filled through online mode only. The CLAT 2017 application fee is Rs. 4000/-for general category and Rs. 3500/- for reserved category. The fee can be paid through any of the modes i.e. online (Debit/ Credit Card/ Net Banking) or Offline (E-Challan) as per their convenience.

After successfully filling the CLAT Form, candidates are issued their CLAT Admit Card. The document is available for download on CLAT website from April 20, 2017. Candidates have to first register themselves for the entrance exam via CAPS system. Through this process, a User ID and Password is generated and these credentials are required at the time of downloading the Hall Ticket for CLAT 2017.

CLAT Online Application Processing System (CAPS)

CAPS is an interface for candidates to make interaction with CLAT 2017, provided at CLAT website. Through CAPS, a candidate can to the following things:

  • Register and apply for the law entrance exam,
  • Check the status of the application,
  • Download the admit card,
  • Check & Download the CLAT result and score card.

Through CAPS website, a partially filled CLAT form can be saved. Also, resume the whole process by logging in again. It is advised that one should not submit the application until it is filled completely. Incomplete applications will be rejected.

How to Register through CAPS?

Step 1: Register yourself by using ‘Register Yourself’

Step 2: Fill the CLAT Online Form

Step 3: Upload Documents- photograph, signature, DOB certificate, and category certificate (if applicable)

Step 4: Payment of Application Fee either by Online/ Offline Mode

Step 5: Download CLAT Question Paper (After the payment of requisite fee of Rs. 400/-)

The system will generate a CAPS Registration ID and a CAPS password, through this credentials one can login to this interface. Candidates must keep these details safe and must not disclose it to anyone. Candidates must login periodically to see the status of their CLAT form

CLAT 2017: Documents Required before filling Form 

There are few documents and information required before registering for CLAT 2017 and logging into CAPS. It is important to keep oneself prepared to avoid any delays in the whole process. 

  • Personal details (Name, Date of Birth, Mobile No., Email ID, Parent’s Name, Parent’s Mobile No., and Address etc.)
  • Address for Communication with PIN Code
  • Educational Details (Percentage of Marks and Institute/ College Name)
  • Front facing Passport size clear photograph of the Candidate with clear lenses (3.5 cms x 4.5 cms) [JPG Format, size not more than 100 KB].
  • Signature of candidate [JPG Format, size not more than 80 KB]
  • Scanned copy of caste certificate (for SC/ ST/ SAP candidates) in PDF format only
  • Latest Category Certificate (SC/ST/OBC)
  • Certificate of impairment for Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and Declaration by the Scribe in the prescribed format
  • Category certificate like E.B.C., B.C., W.B.C., D.F.F., S.E.B.C., Ancestral residents of village Sidhuwal, District Patiala; Son/Daughter of Defense Personnel Deployed in U.P. or Defense Personnel of U.P. either retired or killed/disabled in action; Dependents of Freedom Fighter of U.P. and Kashmiri Migrant etc.
  • Programme in which the candidate wishes to appear (UG Course or PG Course) 
  • Three choices of CLAT examination cities
  • Certificates in support of Candidate’s claim for NRI/NRI sponsored Candidate
  • Domicile Certificate in support of Candidate's claim for consideration under State Quota
  • Scanned copy of Domicile Category in PDF format only (if applicable)
  • Debit/ Credit card or Net banking details for online fee payment

How to Register for CLAT 2017?

  1. Registration at CAPS

Step 1: Registration at CAPS 

Candidates interested in giving CLAT exam will have to register on the CAPS website. They have to fill required information- his/her name, father’s name, mother’s name, guardian’s name, date of birth, a valid E-mail address, a working mobile number and a password.

For the law entrance exam registration, open the CLAT website and click on the apply link. As you click on apply button a new window will open. In that window click on “Register yourself” button.

Now enter the following details as mentioned in the image to complete the registration.

  • Select the programme type (UG/ PG)
  • Enter your Name, Father’s Name, and Mother’s Name and DOB
  • Now fill your valid Email ID and select Nationality (one email id for only one registration)
  • Enter your mobile number (most of the communications may also be sent via SMS)
  • After that enter the captche code as shown in the image
  • And click on submit button to proceed to next step
  • After successful registration, User ID and password will be sent to the registered email id and mobile number.

Note:Candidate’s Name, DOB, Father’s Name, Mother’s Name and Email ID, and Mobile number cannot be changed at any later stage. Therefore, a candidate should carefully enter their details and verify before submitting the same.

Step 2: Fill the CLAT Application Form

After receiving User ID and password, candidates can apply online by logging through these credentials. Now, open CLAT website, click on apply online tab. After that, click on “Already Registered” button.


Now click on the tab ‘Application Form’.


Enter your personal details

After logging to the website enter the following details

  • Select your state/ UT of original residential/ Domicile
  • Select your category and as well as sub-category
  • Select special category (if required)
  • Select gender type and region
  • Now fill your complete address
  • Click on save and continue button



Enter your Educational Details

  • Select grading mechanism (Marking Scheme or other)
  • Select year of passing the 12th class
  • Enter Board Name
  • Enter maximum marks, mark obtained and percentage of mark
  • Now click on save and continue button


Note: Candidates are required to convert grade /CGPA (if any) into percentage.

Preference for NLUs

  • Choose NLUs as per your preference
  • The same preferential choices will be considered during CLAT 2017 Counselling
  • Click on save and continue button


Upload your Documents

In this step, you have to upload your scanned copy of photo, signature and DOB certificate. Scanned copies of SC/ST and/or SAP certificates/ state domicile (in PDF format), Scribe Declaration form in case of SAP candidates are also to be uploaded, if applicable. And also enter the 3 city for CLAT 2017 exam center. After uploading each file successfully click on save and continue button.


Upload Photograph 

As you click on here button given on the page then upload the photo by doing the following:

  • Click on browse button
  • select the location where you have saved your file
  • Then choose the file
  • If file is larger than crop it
  • And close the window


Upload Signature

  • Click on browse button
  • Select the location where you have saved your file
  • Then select the file
  • If file is larger than crop it
  • And close the window


Upload DOB Certificate

  • Click on browse button
  • Select the location where you have saved your file
  • Then select the file
  • If file is larger than crop it
  • And close the window


After completing the above section, you can now proceed to make the application fee payment. The details of the application fee are given below.

Step 3: Pay Application Fee

CLAT 2017 application fee can be paid via two mode either online mode (Debit/ Credit card/ net banking) or offline (e-challan). The fee varies for all the categories and the fee is non- refundable too. For SC/ ST category the fee is Rs. 3,500/- whereas, for Unreserved/SAP/OBC/ any other category, Rs. 4000/- is the fee.

Detail of the each process is given below:


Online Payment Mode

  • If you select online mode to pay the application fee using Debit/ Credit card/ net banking account. Charges may vary depend upon the payment option.
  • Now select either card or net banking options
  • If select card method for payment, ill your card details (select card type, card number, expiry date, and CVV number)
  • If select net banking, from the CAPS interface, you will be redirected to a bank you choose
  • Login with your net banking id (user id and password)
  • Pay the application fee by clicking on pay now button
  • Once you confirm, you will be redirected back to the CAPS Interface


Offline Payment Mode (E-Challan):

If you select offline mode to pay the application fee through e-challan then e-challan will be generated in PDF format. Go to any ICICI branch and pay the fee before March 28, 2017.

  • If you choose to pay the fee through bank challan then click on e-challan
  • Download it and take a printout on an A4 paper
  • Now fill few more details such as date and signature
  • Go to any nearest ICICI bank branch (There is no need to have an account in than bank/branch)
  • Pay the application fee there
  • The bank will retain one copy and give back the another copy to the candidate which he/she has to retain for reference
  • The application fee amount and the bank charges for the challan option will be shown to the candidate and he/she has to confirm that the payment is for CLAT 2017

Note: No changes can be made in the application form after it is submitted and the bank challan is generated by the system. The candidate must ensure that the formalities for offline payment are completed before the due date.

Preview of CLAT Application Form

You can preview your filled application form by clicking on ‘Preview Application’ button and then check ‘I Agree’ box below the Declaration before clicking on ‘Submit’ button. Once the candidate submits the application form, no further changes can be made to the application.

Step 4: Download Filled Application Form

After CAPS acknowledges the successful payment of the CLAT 2017 application fee through Online/offline, a confirmation mail will be sent to your registered email id. Candidate can download the complete filled application form or confirmations acknowledge slip in PDF format. It can be downloaded by clicking on “Click here to take print out of confirmation page”. Filled application form will contain the fee details also.

Candidates should keep this application form for their personal records and any other further communication. There is no need to send the print out the application form to the CLAT office. On the submission of CLAT form, a message will appear on the computer screen that the candidate has successfully completed the CLAT 2017 registration.

Specifications for Photograph:

  • Photo must be passport and coloured and must be taken after or on January 01, 2017

  • Photo must be taken in a very light or white background
  • Photo file should be in .JPEG format and standard print size 30 mm (width) x 45 mm (height)
  • The size of the file should be 100 KB (max.)
  • Resolution of the photo should be 480 x 640 pixel (max.) and 240 x 320 pixel (min.)
  • In the photograph, the height of the face (between chin and the top of the forehead) should occupy about 50% of the height of the photograph
  • The candidate must not wear spectacles with dark or tinted glasses, only clear glasses are permitted
  • If the candidate normally wears spectacles, glare on glasses is not acceptable in his/her photo. Glare can be avoided with a slight downward tilt of the glasses or by removing the glasses for the photo shoot

Specifications for Signature:

  • Draw a 7cm x 2 cm rectangle box on A4 white paper
  • Put your signature with black/ blue ball point pen in the box
  • Scanned this using a scanner
  • Maintain 420 pixels in width and 120 pixels in height and of maximum 80 KB size
  • Save the image in .JPEG format
  • Resolution of the image should be 560 x 160 pixel (max.) and 280 x 80 pixel (min.)

Note: Candidates try to avoid taking the photographs of the signatures using mobile phone or digital cameras.

CLAT 2017 Application Fee

There is category wise application fee for the CLAT Exam which is mentioned below:

For General/ OBC/ Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and other Category CandidatesRs. 4000/-

Note: The candidates will have to bear the bank transaction charges for remitting the fee online/ offline.

Reasons for Rejection of CLAT Form 2017:

Due to the following any one of the reason, your CLAT form will be rejected.

(i) An incomplete application form in any respect without uploading photo and signature

(ii) An incomplete application form in respect of without fee payment will be rejected

(iii) If face of the candidate in the photograph or signature is unclear in the application, it may be rejected

How to recover CLAT Form Password?

If any candidate forgot his/ her password of CLAT 2017 login page, it can be retrieved by following some simple steps:

  • Open the CLAT 2017 website
  • Click on Apply Online link
  • Now click on already registered button
  • After that click on forgot password
  • Enter your registered email id
  • Enter the character as shown in the image
  • Click on get password button

After doing the all above steps, you will receive a mail containing your password. Use this password for logging to the CLAT 2017website.


SC/ST Certificate

Applicants who claim to be in any of the category SC/ST have to submit valid document issued by competent authority, to qualify for the reduced fee.

Specially Abled Persons (SAP) Category

  • For SAP candidates with any category of disability (viz., blindness or low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability, and/or cerebral palsy), benefit will be given to only those who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment with respect to a body part/system/extremity/whole body, etc.
  • Candidates should upload a recently obtained valid SAP certificate to avail the concession
  • SAP candidates appearing in the CLAT 2017 shall be entitled to an additional time of 40 minutes
  • SAP candidates are required to fill in declaration form from the Scribe and upload the same
  • SAP candidate, if needed, can take the assistance of a Scribe during the CLAT 2017 examination
  • Candidates having impairment and those who require a scribe to appear for the test must specify the same in the relevant column of the Online Application Form, citing suitable justification for the purpose and also by uploading the photocopies of the supporting documents (duly attested by a Gazetted Officer). The relevant documents must include;
  • A certificate of impairment from a competent authority
  • A statement indicating whether the scribe will be brought by the candidate or needs to be arranged by the CLAT authorities
  • A declaration from the scribe (if brought by the candidate) that the scribe complies with the preconditions and he/she will not in any way help the candidate answer any question in the paper, apart from his/her regular duty of reading out the questions and marking/clicking the correct answers.

This year CLAT 2017 exam will be conducted by Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala. Candidates wish to apply for CLAT will have to fill the NLUs list (while filling the application form) according to their preference by reading the brochure of each Law University, link is given below:
