CDS 2017 Application Form

CDS (Combined Defence Services) 2017 is will be conducted by UPSC (Union Public Services Commission) on February 5, 2017. CDS 2017 Registration is over now. Last date for the Submitting the application form was December 2, 2016. Candidates were supposed to submit the application form online through the UPSC Website. 

CDS Exam is conducted for recruitment to Permanent Commissioned Service in Indian Military, Indian Naval and Indian Airforce. UPSC has already announced that CDS and NDA (National Defence Academy) would be conducted twice every year.

The Admit card for CDS I 2017 is released by the UPSC on January 6, 2017. Candidates can download the admit card from the official website using their Application Number and Date of Birth. The CDS exam is expected to take place in 41 exam cities across the country.

Eligibility Criteria for CDS Exam 2017

All the candidates must carefully go through the CDS I 2017 Eligibility and other additional requirements before they proceed to fill the online Application Form. The Eligibility Criteria comprises of Education Qualification, Age limit, Nationality and any other requirement thereof. The details for each criteria is mentioned below.


The prospective applicant must be 1 of the following Nationals/subject to be eligible for appearing in CDS I 2017 Exam:

  1. Citizen of India
  2. Subject of Bhutan
  3. Subject of Nepal
  4. A Tibetan refugee who has migrated to India before January 01, 1962, intending to settle permanently in India
  5. A PIO (Person of Indian Origin) who has moved from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam intending to settle permanently in India.

NOTE: Foreign Nationals and subjects of neighboring countries have to procure a certificate of eligibility from Government of India, barring Gorkha Subjects of Nepal. These candidates would be considered provisionally eligible to appear for the exam provided that the certificate is provided before declaration of the result by UPSC.

Educational Qualification

The educational qualification criteria varies for participants applying to different courses and different institutes.

  1. For admission to I.M.A. (Indian Military Academy) and Officers’ Training Academy, candidates need to possess a degree of recognized University or equivalent.
  2. For admission Indian Naval academy, candidates should have completed their Graduation in Engineering from a recognized University or Institution.
  3. For admission to Air Force Academy, graduation from a recognized University, along with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level or Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.)

Candidates putting their first choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are required to submit proof of provisional certificates from their degree course on the starting date of the SSB Interview at the SSB (Services Selection Board).

NOTE: Candidates who are currently in the final year /semester of their Degree course are allowed to appear for the examination provided that they don’t have any backlogs till their last semesters. These candidates have to submit their final result within the stipulated deadline.

Age Limit

The age limit for admission to Short Service Commission Course and Permanent Commission Course is mentioned in the table below.

For verification of Date of birth of Applicants, the Commission would only accept DOB as recorded in the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving Certificate or in a certificate recognized by an Indian University as equivalent to Matriculation or an extract from Register of Matriculates maintained by a University.

Sex and Marital Status

  1. IMA: Unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply who are born between July 02, 1993 and July 01, 1998.
  2. Indian Naval Academy: Only Unmarried male candidates born between July 02, 1993 and July 01, 1998 can apply.
  3. Air Force Academy: Male Candidates should be born between July 02, 1993 and July 01, 1997. Upper age limit for those holding valid and current Commercial Pilot License issued by DGCA, India is relaxed upto 26 years. These candidates should be born between July 02, 1991 and July 01, 1997. Candidates must be unmarried if they are below 25 years of age while married candidates above 25 years of age are also eligible to apply.
  4. Officer’s Training Academy (SSC Course for Men): Married or Unmarried candidates should be born between July 02, 1992 and July 01, 1998 in order to be eligible for this course.
  5. Officer’s Training Academy (SSC Women Non-Technical course): Unmarried women, widows who have not remarried and divorcees (holding valid divorce documents) who have not remarried can apply only for this course. Candidate should be born between July 02, 1992 and July 01, 1998.

NOTE: Male divorcee/widower candidates are not eligible to apply for Permanent Commission course at IMA/Indian Naval Academy/Air Force Academy.

Physical Standards

All the candidates must be physically fit according to the prescribed physical standards. All the candidates are advised to get themselves properly examined by an authorized medical board before submitting their application forms.

Candidates recommended by the Services Selection Board (SSB) would undergo a medical examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers and only candidates approved by the medical board would be admitted to the institute.

CDS I 2017 Application Fee

Application fee for CDS I 2017 is INR 200/-. Application fee can be remitted by candidates in namely three modes – depositing the fee in cash at any branch of SBI, Paying the fee using Visa/Master Credit/Debit card or submitting the fee through Net Banking Facility of SBI, State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/State Bank of Patiala/State Bank of Travancore.

How to Apply for CDS I 2017

The Application form for CDS 2017 can be filled be through official website only. There is no offline mode for CDS I 2017 Application Process.The Application Process for CDS 1 started on November 9, 2016. Candidates must ensure that they complete the online registration and form filling procedure before the closing deadline. Last Date for filling CDS 1 2017 online form was December 2, 2016.

The Online Application Form of CDS I 2017 is primarily divided into 2 parts – Part I Registration and Part II Registration. The Part I registration is devoted to filling up all details related candidates’ educational qualifications, personal information, contact details, nationality, category, etc.

The Part II Registration is the next step which deals with Payment of Application fee, selection of exam centers from the available list of centers and Upload their Passport size Photograph & Signature.

Pre-requisites for filling CDS 2017 Application Process

Candidates are required to be ready with certain details and documents before they proceed to fill the CDS I Application Form online.

  • Class 10th Mark sheet
  • Class 12th Mark sheet
  • Class 10th (Matriculation Certificate)
  • Mark sheets for all the years/semesters of Graduation (Degree Course)
  • For students studying in the final year of their degree course, Mark sheets of all the semesters upto the final semester
  • Scanned Photograph
  • Scanned Photograph
  • A computer system with good internet connection
  • Printer attached to the system for taking printout of the copy of bank challan to deposit fee in cash

Specifications for Photograph and Signature

Candidates should note that the Photograph and Signature should be scanned and uploaded in the prescribed specifications only. The specifications recommended by the commission are indicated below for all the applicants.

  • The Scanned Photograph should be clear and preferably taken on a white background.
  • The signature should be taken on white A4 size paper with black ball point pen and must be clearly visible after being scanned
  • The scanned photograph and signature should be in the .JPG format
  • The maximum size of the scanned file must not exceed 40 KB and should not be less than 3 KB under any circumstances
  • Scan the Photograph and Signature in 200 dpi
  • The scanned photograph and signature should have the following dimensions:
  1. Photograph – 140 pixels (Height) x 110 pixels (width)
  2. Signature – 110 pixels (Height) x 140 pixels (width)

NOTE: Candidates submitting their forms on an MS Window operating system can use MS Paint or MSOffice Picture Manager to procure the scanned images in the desired specification. They are however, free to use any other photo editor as long as they are complying to the specifications.

How to fill CDS I 2017 Form

All the aspirants first need to complete the Part I registration before they move on to the Part II Registration. The various steps involved in the CDS I 2017 Application process is explained below.

Part I Registration

To complete the Part I Registration process, candidates should visit the official site of CDS I Exam and follow the steps discussed below.

  1. Visit the official site of UPSC Online to complete the Application Process in online mode.
  2. Check the name of examination under the Examination tab. The complete exam name is “Combined Defence Services Examination (II)”
  3. Click on “Click Here for Part I” to complete the Part I registration process and proceed towards Part I Registration.
  4. On Page 1 of Part I Registration, candidates should provide their personal information as per the fields indicated on the Application form.
    1. Personal details would include particulars related to 'Name', 'DOB', 'Father's name', 'Mother's name', 'Address' and category.
    2. ‘Community’ is the particular community to which one belongs – General, OBC, SC, ST; ‘Fee Remission’ can be availed by candidates belonging to SC/ST community and Female candidates. “Yes” is already indicated in the “Fee Remission” field if SC/ST is selected in the “Community” field or “Female” in the Sex Field.
  5. After you clicks on “Continue”, second page of part I registration would display. Here, you need to make the preference for "IMA" NA" "AFA" and "OTA".
    1. Preference should be indicated using numbers 0/1/2/3/4. At least 1 preference must be indicated on the form.
    2. The choices for the institute must be properly indicated. For example, If you wish to apply for “IMA” then IMA should be your first preference. However, if you don’t wish to set IMA as your preference then indicate “0” against it.
    3. Female candidate should indicate OTA as the only preference as they are only eligible for SSC course at Officer’s Training Academy, Chennai.
    4. You must indicate whether you have obtained or likely to obtain NCC "C" certificate (Sr. Division).
    5. Also, a candidate needs to indicate whether he/she is serving the armed forces and whether he/she has attained Sainik School.
  6. On the next page, you will have to verify all the information mentioned in the Application form. Click on “Update” to modify any information in case of any mismatch/discrepancy. No changes or modifications would be permitted at latter stages of the examination.
  7. If you have verified the information and submitted it then he/she can view the final page pf Part I Registration. On this page, you can view system generated unique 'Registration ID' apart from other details like 'Name', 'Father's Name', 'Mother's name',  'DOB', 'Address', E-mail ID etc. mentioned by the candidate in the form. You will be also able to view a confirmation of completing Part I Registration Process.

NOTE: It is advised that candidates should take a printout after completion of Part I registration Process since the Registration ID and DOB would be required at all the steps of completing Application Process.

Part II Registration

The next step after Part I Registration is Part II Registration where the candidates have to complete remaining steps like fee payment, select examination center and uploaded photograph & signature.

Click on “Part II Registration” and enter your “Registration Id” and “Date of Birth” (DOB). The steps related to Part II Registration is mentioned below.

Fee Payment

The first step of Part II Registration is fee payment. On the first page, candidates can see 3 options to make payment “Pay by Cash”, “Pay by Card” and “Pay by Net banking” along with a radio button. Select the radio button corresponding to the payment choice. Each mode is explained below.

  1. Pay by Cash

Candidates have to visit the nearest branch of State Bank of India and submit the fee in cash. The Bank in return would provide the Transaction no. and date of transaction on the pay-in-slip. Candidates have to enter the “Transaction Number” and “Date of Transaction”.

Candidates should click on “Continue” and then click on “Submit”. Candidates can view all the details and move to next step for uploading and signature by clicking on Proceed.

  1. Pay by Visa/Master Credit/Debit card/Net Banking

Candidates submitting the Application fee through Visa/Master Debit/Credit card or through the Net Banking facility of State Bank of India/ State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/ State Bank of Hyderabad/ State Bank of Mysore/ State Bank of Patiala/ State Bank of Travancore should click on the radio button next to it.

The applicants are redirected to the payment site of the respective bank. After completing the payment procedure, candidate would be redirected to payment details. Candidates would be instructed to proceed towards uploading images.

Uploading Photograph and Signature

Candidates have to upload their recent passport size color photograph and signature in the next step as per the desired specifications of commission. Select the .jpg file from your system by clicking on the browse button to upload them in the Application form. The photograph and signature can be previewed on a fresh page.

It must be noted that if the photograph and signature are not properly identifiable or are swapped in each other’s place than Commission would summarily reject the Application form. Therefore, candidates must ensure that both the scanned images are properly uploaded. They also have the option to re-upload their photographs in case they are not clear. Candidates have to click on Conform once they are satisfied with quality of images.

Selecting Exam Centers

Candidates have to select the exam centers from the drop down menu for appearing in the CDS I 2017 Examination. All the exam centers would be allotted to the candidates on the first com first serve basis. So, candidates should try and complete the registration process as early as possible to get their preferred exam center.

Final Confirmation

After completing all the steps, candidates are informed about the successful submission of CDS I 2017 Application Form on a fresh page. Candidates should click on View/Print Application link to view the details in the Application form. Also, candidate are advised to take a printout of Application Form for future purposes.

CDS 2016 Application Form

Candidates need not sent the printout of duly submitted Online Application form for CDS I 2017 to the commission’s office. However, they must preserve the printout of the Application form carefully for any future queries.

Grounds for Rejecting CDS I 2017 Application Form

The Application form for CDS I 2017 could be rejected on the following grounds by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). Some grounds for rejection of forms are discussed below.

  • Bad quality of Submitted Photograph.
  • Bad quality of Submitted Signature
  • Part I of the Application form is only filled and submitted
  • Swapping of Photograph with that of signature
  • Submission of Signature only and not Photograph
  • Submission of Photograph only and not Signature
  • Submitted Part I Registration and Fee Payment but did not Submit Part II (failure to Upload Photograph and signature)
  • Multiple Application form submitted
  • Application fee is paid for an Application form with a different Registration ID
  • Non submission of payment proof within specified time period in case of fictitious payments

The list for Applications rejected on the grounds of non-receipt of payment details would be displayed on the official website of UPSC as well as sent via email to candidates within two weeks of the closure of CDS I 2017 Application Process.

Applicants are required to submit the proof of payment within 10 days of the official communication either through speed post or in person to the commission. The commission would revive application form in case of genuine receipt of payment.

CDS I 2017 Admit Card

The Admit card for CDS I 2017 is released by UPSC on Jaunary 6, 2017. It would be available on the official site of UPSC. CDS I 2017 Admit Card would be not be sent via email id or courier. The admit card is available in the online mode only.

It would contain details related to the Name, Roll Number and Venue of Examination along with information related to exam date and timings. The admit card should be accompanied by valid Id proofs in original.

Steps to download CDS I 2017 Admit Card

  1. Visit the official site of CDS I 2017
  2. Click on the link to download CDS I 2017 Admit Card
  3. Enter “Registration ID” and “DOB”
  4. View all the details correctly
  5. Download and take printout of the Admit card carefully.

In case, the candidates don’t receive the e-admit card on their registered ID or by logging in with their “Registration ID” and “DOB” on the official website then the candidates need to contact the facilitation centers on the following numbers: 011-23098543 / 23385271 / 23381125 / 23098591.

CDS 2017 Exam Centers

There are total 41 exam cities where UPSC would conduct the first phase of CDS 2017. Candidates have to provide the preference for CDS I 2017 Exam centers at the time of filling Application Form. The centers would be allocated on the basis of preference mentioned by the candidates in their forms.

It must be noted by all the candidates that there is a ceiling on number of candidates admitted for particular test centers except in the case of Chennai, Delhi, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur. The candidates who have applied earlier are more likely to get their preferred exam centers since the centers are allotted on the “first-apply-first-allot” basis.

The list of CDS I 2017 Exam Center is provided below for reference of all the candidates. However, the list is tentative and the Commission reserves the final right to remove or add any new exam center from the existing list of centers notified them.

NOTE: The commission would not accept any request for change of exam centers. However, a written request addressed to J.S. (Exam), UPSC for change of exam center to be considered on the basis of a valid request.
