CAT 2017 Registration and Application Process

The application process for CAT 2017 or Common Admission Test 2017 will start from 1st  week August. Candidates will be given a month period time to apply for CAT exam. Last year the process began on August 8, 2017. 

The CAT 2017 Application Process is entirely online. Candidate can check the official website ( to know about the application process. An aspirant can apply for CAT 2017 and download their admit card from the same website. After CAT 2017 result declaration, candidate can also check their score card by visiting the official website.

Students who attains bachelor degree or are in the final year of their pursuing program are eligible to appear in CAT 2017. There is no age limit set for CAT 2017.

The application process is divided in five main steps. The following flowchart graphically explains the main steps of application process for CAT 2017.

CAT 2017 Eligibility

In order to appear for CAT 2017, a candidate must fulfill below mentioned eligibility criteria. Candidates who could not fulfill the minimum eligibility qualification could face rejection at any stage of application and selection.The candidate must consider CAT Eligibility criteria, which is listed below:

  1. A Candidate should have Bachelor’s degree in any stream or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university.
  2. A Candidate must have an aggregate of at least 50% marks in Bachelor degree.
  3. Candidates who are in the final year of their Bachelor program or are awaiting their final year result can also appear for CAT 2017. Such candidates will have to submit a certificate stating that they have completed all the requirements of the program issued by Principal/Registrar of their respective College/Institute latest by June 30, 2017.
  4. There is no age restriction for appearing in CAT 2017.

CAT 2017 Application Fee

Application fee is one of the important aspect of the application process, without which a candidate cannot complete the whole procedure. The application fee for CAT has remained constant for the last three years. The fee is expected to remain the same for this year too. The detailed fee structure for CAT 2017 is mentioned below:

CAT 2017 Registration Process

Before beginning the application process, an aspirant will have to register first at the official website for CAT 2017 applications. The registration process is necessary as it generates a unique login id and password. This login id and password is vital to the application process of CAT 2017.

Before beginning the registration process, one must check the eligibility for CAT EXAM. This part is critical, since if you do not fulfill the eligibility criteria, your application will be rejected.

To register successfully for CAT you will need to have certain details at hand. These details are listed below:

  • Valid email address
  • Valid Mobile phone number
  • Name of Candidate as on official documents
  • Date of birth as on official documents

Below is the step-by-step guide to register for CAT 2017:

  1. Visit the official website for CAT.
  2. On the right side of the window, you will find a “Register Now” link. Click on the link and you will be redirected to the Registration Form window.
  3. Fill in the following details correctly. For security reasons, information entered at this stage cannot be changed later. The details required are:
  • Name of Candidate
  • Date of Birth
  • Email Address
  • Mobile Number
  1. Enter the captcha code correctly. Captcha is a security feature to ensure that the form is filled by a human and not a computer program. If the captcha code is not clear, click on the “Get a New Image” link to get a new captcha code.
  2. After filling the captcha, select the “I Agree” button in the Declaration box. It is compulsory as without the declaration, the form will not be submitted.
  3. Click on “Submit” button at the end of the form.

Your registration process is complete now. On successful completion of the registration process, you will shortly receive your login id on the email id you provided in the registration form. The said email will be sent by Administratorand have CAT 2017 login Details as the subject line. You should note down the login id and keep it safe.

The corresponding password for CAT 2017 will be sent as an SMS to the mobile phone number provided during the registration process. The SMS will have LM-IIMCAT as the sender. Make sure to note down the password where you have noted the login id. Keep this SMS safe for future use.

CAT 2017 Application Process

After you have successfully completed the registration process, you can move on to filling the application form. Form filling is the most essential part of application process. You should read the information bulletin carefully and fill in the application form accordingly in order to avoid rejection.

For filling the application form you will have to first login to the official website. The steps to login are described below:

  1. Go to the CAT official  website
  2. On the right side of the homepage, above the Register Now” link, you will find “Existing User” tab. Click on this tab.
  3. You will be redirected to Login Window.
  4. Enter the Login id and password sent to you on your registered email address and mobile number.
  5. Click on the “Login” tab.

Following this process you will be able to login to your account and open application form. The application form comprises of the following five sections:

  • Personal Details
  • Academic History
  • Work Experience
  • Programme Preference
  • Payment of Application Fee


General Instructions for Filling CAT 2017 Application Form

While filling the application form for CAT 2017, there are certain general rules which you must adhere to. Deviation from these instructions might hamper submission of your application form. The general instruction for filling the form are listed below:

  1. You should use the following versions of web browsers for filling the application form:
  • Internet Explorer- version 7 to 11
  • Mozilla Firefox – version 14 to 34
  • Google Chrome- version 20 to 36
  1. All the fields which are marked with an * are compulsory. If you leave out any * marked field, your application form will not get submitted.
  2. After completing one part of the application form you can click on “Save and Continue” to move on to the next section of the application form. You can also “Save” and exit at any point and login later to fill the rest of your application form.
  3. You can use the mouse or the touch pad on your laptop to move between two sections. Do not use tab key.
  4. If due to any issue you ae not able to finish filling your application form in one go, you can login again and finish the process.
  5. Recheck the data filled in various fields before making the payment for application fee. After payment of application fee, you cannot make any change to the form.

CAT 2017 Application Form

After logging in successfully to your candidate account for CAT 2017, you can begin the application process. The application form is divided in five sections. Below we are providing steps for filling each section separately.

Personal Details

In this section you will need to fill in the following details:

  1. Enter Father’s/Husband’s/Guardian’s name.
  2. Enter Gender as applicable.
  3. Enter Nationality as Indian. For those who are applying under the Foreign category should mention their nationality in the adjacent field “Specify your Nationality”.
  4. Select Category from among the given options, i.e., General, SC/ST, NC-OBC
  5. In case of Reserved Categories, you will need to fill additional details such as Caste/Tribe name, State/Union Territory of Caste/Tribe and Serial Number of Caste/tribe. You can access these details from the National Commission for Backward Classes website.
  6. If person with disability then select “Yes” in the Person with Disability/Differently Abled field. Here you will have to fill in the category of disability, Disability percentage and Wheelchair Support requirement.
  7. Enter communication address correctly.
  8. Provide alternate email address and mobile number if available.
  9. After filling in all the required personal details, you will have to upload necessary documents as per your selections in the application form. Uploading Photograph and Signature is compulsory for all candidates irrespective of their category.
  10. After uploading the documents, click on the “Save and Continue” button and move to the next section.

Academic Details

In this section you have to enter the details of your academic qualification. Here you have to enter the details of not just the qualifying examination but details of your education from class 10th onwards to the most recent academic qualification. You will need to enter the details of following academic qualifications:

  • SSC/10th class examination (Compulsory for all candidates)
  • HSC/12th class examination /Diploma (Compulsory for all candidates)
  • Bachelor Degree Details (Compulsory for all candidates)
  • Other Professional Degree
  • Post-graduation Degree Details

SSC/10th class Examination Details

The aggregate percentage will be calculated against all the subjects mentioned in the mark sheet for class 10th. In this section you will need to enter the following details:

  • Aggregate marks in %ge
  • Total Marks Obtained
  • Maximum Marks
  • Board name for SSC/10th or equivalent examination
  • Month and Year of completion of SSC/10th

HSC/12th/Diploma Course Details

In this case again the aggregate percentage will be calculated against all subjects mentioned in the mark sheet for class 12th. In this section you will need to enter the following details:

  • Course type – 12th or Diploma (Select the one which is applicable)
  • Aggregate marks in %ge
  • Total marks obtained in the examination
  • Maximum Marks

Bachelor Degree Details

In this section you have enter the details of your Bachelor degree program. Do not get confused if your degree is an Honors degree. In this section you can enter details of all types of under-graduate or equivalent programs which are approved by UGC, Association of Indian Universities, or Ministry of HRD.

Candidates who are in the final year of the program should select “Yesin the field “Are you in the final year of Bachelor Degree?” Those who have completed their Bachelor degree program should select Yes in the relevant field.

In this section you will need to fill the following details:

  • Total duration of Bachelor degree program
  • % of marks obtained in Bachelor degree
  • In case of those who are in the final year, fill in the % of marks mentioned in the latest mark sheet issued by the College/University
  • Type of University/Institution
  • State/Union Territory of the University
  • Name of the University/Institution
  • Name of the degree program
  • Discipline
  • Month and Year of Course Commencement
  • Month and Year of Course Completion

Other Professional Degree Details

In this section you have to enter details of any other professional courses such as CS, CA, ICWA, or any other degree. In case of candidates who have not undergone any graduate degree, filling this section is compulsory. However, in case of multiple professional degrees, enter marks for the degree in which you have scored the maximum marks.

In this section you will need to fill the following details:

  • Professional Inter Marks (%)
  • Professional Final Marks (%)
  • Month & Year of Course Commencement
  • Month & Year of Course Completion

Post-Graduation Degree Details

This is optional and students who have completed their PG degree only should fill these details. You will have to enter the following details:

  • Status of Master Degree program
  • Total duration of degree
  • Aggregate marks in %
  • Type of University or Institute
  • State/Union Territory of University
  • University Name
  • College/Institution Name
  • Degree Name
  • Discipline
  • Month & Year of Course Commencement
  • Month & Year of Course Completion

After filling in the details click on “Save & Continue” and move to the next section.

Work Experience

In this section, you need to enter details of your work experience till July 31, 2016. The work experience duration should be in months and not in years.

What counts as valid Work Experience for CAT 2017 application process?

  • Work done only after Graduation degree
  • Full-time and paid work

What does not fall under Work Experience for CAT 2017 application process?

  • Any job/work done before graduation
  • Part-time job experience
  • Freelancing job experience
  • Volunteer/un-paid work

Steps to fill in Work Experience details:

  1. Browse through the list of Work areas and check the relevant box.
  2. In the adjacent column, mention the number of months you have worked in this field.
  3. If your area of work is not listed, the check the box marked as “Other”. In the adjacent column specify work area and work experience in months. You can add more rows and columns in case you need to add more areas of work experience.
  4. At the end of the section there is a field for Total Work Experience in Months. You do not have to fill this column. Your total experience will get calculated automatically once fill in the details in the rows above.
  5. Click on “Save & Continue” to move to the next section of the application form.

Programme Preference

 In this section you will have to select the name of programmes offered at various IIMs as per your preference. Along with the preference for programme you also have to enter, your choice of city for interview in an adjacent column. In case of PGP/PGDM programmes at the following IIMs, you must select same interview city:

At the end of the page you will also have to select your exam city centre preference. There is option to select four exam city centres. You cannot repeat a city as your preferred city. After selecting the exam centre preferences click on “Save and Continue” button.

CAT 2017 Application Fee and Payment

Like the application process, payment method for CAT 2017 application fee is entirely online too. Applicants can choose between paying through Net banking, Credit Card, or Debit Card. While paying online, there is an additional Transaction Processing charge, which an applicant has to pay in addition to the application fees. The details of the additional charges incurred are given below:

Before you begin the payment process, make sure you have the following details at hand:

In case of card payment,

  • Card number
  • Expiry Date
  • CVV/CVV2 number

In case of payment through Net banking,

  • Login Id
  • Password

To complete the payment process, follow the given steps:

  1. Select the relevant payment method from the list.
  2. Check the declaration box and Select I Agree.
  3. Click on Submit and Pay button.
  4. You will be redirected to the payment gateway.
  5. Enter payment details as per your preference.
  6. After successful payment you will receive a transaction number which you should note down.
  7. Once the process is complete you will receive a confirmation email from CAT 2017 authorities stating that your application is submitted successfully.      

CAT 2017 Application Required Documents

During the application process, you need to upload certain documents. Without uploading these documents you will not be able to submit the application form. The list of the documents and their specification is given below:

The format of the caste and disability certificate is available on the official CAT website. You can download the certificate, fill the details and get it attested by the concerned authority. In case you already have the said certificates, make sure that they are in the same format as mentioned on the CAT 2017 official website.

How to compress Images?

The images which are to be uploaded in the application form should be of a definite file size and dimension. By following the process given below, you can easily convert any image file into the desired dimension and file size.

  1. Select the image file and right click.
  2. Click on “Open With” and select Paint.
  3. The image will open in Paint window.
  4. Click on the “File” menu on the top left hand corner of the window.
  5. Select “Properties”.
  6. A small box will open where you can specify/change the width and height of the image. For Photograph it will be 35mmX45mm and for Signature it will be 80mmX35mm.
  7. Click “OK” and save the image.

CAT 2017 Form Correction

For applicants of CAT 2017, form correction is allowed only till the payment is not done. Once the application fees is paid, you cannot make any changes or corrections in the application form. So before making the payment, make sure to go through the details you have filled in the form. The following details, which you provide during the registration process, cannot be changed at any stage:

  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Email address
  • Phone number

The step-by-step process for form correction is given below:

  1. Open the official website for CAT 2017.
  2. Click on the “Existing User” button.
  3. Enter your login id and password and click on “Login”.
  4. Navigate through the different sections in the application form and check the details you have entered.
  5. Change or modify the details which are incorrect or incomplete.
  6. Click on “Save and Continue” or “Save” and Exit.

CAT 2017 Password Recovery Options

The password for your CAT 2017 login id will be sent via SMS to your registered mobile number. In case you misplace or lose your password, you can always recover it by going on the official CAT 2017 website. The process to recover your password is given below:

  1. Go to the official website
  2. Click on the “Existing User” tab.
  3. In the login window, enter your login id and then click on the “Forgot Password” tab.
  4. A new window will open. Here you have to enter a captcha string.
  5. The new password will be sent to your registered email address. Regenerated password will not be sent via SMS.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Ques 1: I have completed my Bachelor’s degree recently and my University follows grading system. How do I enter marks scored?

Ans. If your mark sheet contains the equivalent percentage for the respective grades, you will enter the percentage equivalent to the grade scored by you. If it’s not given, then contact your university and procure the equivalent percentage for your grade score.

Ques 2:I have completed my dual degree program (B.Tech.+M.Tech. or B.Tech.+M.Sc. or BS+MS). How should I fill my aggregate percentage for Bachelor’s program?

Ans. If you have done a dual degrees, you can fill the aggregate of marks which ae equivalent to Bachelor’s degree. If there are marks given in the Master’s category fill it in the section for Master’s degree details.

Ques 3: I have completed my education in the 10+2+2/10+1+1+2 pattern. How do I fill in my Bachelor’s degree details?

  1. First ascertain that your degree is recognized by UGC, AIU or other equivalent bodies. If your degree is recognized, you can fill in the details as given below:
  1. Enter 10th marks in the respective field.
  2. Enter 12th or next two year’s marks in 12th/HSC field.
  3. In the field for Bachelor’s degree marks select duration as 3 years and enter the respective marks. You must not forget to select year of commencement and completion of the program accordingly.

Ques.4 I have changed my name by following the due procedure however my degree certificate still bears my old name. Which name should I enter in the field for Candidate’s name?

Ans. You have to enter your changed name but you will have to produce relevant documents at the time of examination, interview and admission.
