AFCAT 2018 Exam Pattern

Indian Air Force will release the notification and exam pattern for AFCAT 2018 on its official website www.careerairforce.nic.in. AFCAT 2018 will be a conventional pen and paper based test i.e. the mode of the test is offline. The question paper will be available in English language only.

  • The duration of AFCAT 2018 will be 2 hours (120 minutes).
  • It will comprise multiple choice questions (MCQs) i.e. objective type questions.
  • The total number of questions asked in AFCAT 2018 will be 100.
  • The question paper will be segregated into 4 segments namely- General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical ability and Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test.
  • Every correct answer will be awarded +3 marks and negative marking will be applicable.
  • AFCAT 2018 Syllabus will be based on Higher Secondary or 10+2 level knowledge.

AFCAT is conducted twice a year. The registration process will begin from the first week of December 2017. Applicants who wish to be recruited in Ground Duty (Technical) post will have to appear for EKT exam which will be based on the respective engineering discipline as chosen by the individual. The exam will be conducted in January and August 2018. Aspirants who qualify the exam will be called for the further rounds of selection. AFCAT 2018 (Air Force Common Admission Test) is a national level exam conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF). It is a portal for recruiting meritorious applicants to various post offered by the IAF.

Exam Pattern of AFCAT 2018 will give all applicants an idea about what can be expected from the exam. The details about various aspects related to the management entrance test like the mode of the exam, time duration of the exam, type of questions that will be asked in the exam, marking scheme, total number of questions, etc. are stated in the table that follows:

AFCAT 2018 Exam Pattern in Detail

AFCAT 2018 is a pen and paper based offline test. The medium of language of the exam will be English only. It will consist of 100 objective questions to be solved within a duration of 120 minutes. The maximum marks an aspirant can score in AFCAT 2018 are 300. Students must select the most appropriate answer out of the 4 given alternative options. They should note that negative marking scheme will be applicable for this test.

The question paper will be segregated into 4 sections- General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical ability and Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test. Participants can choose to solve the question paper in any order they want. There will be no restriction regarding solving a particular section within a stipulated time limit as aspirants have to mark their answers on an OMR sheet.

AFCAT 2018 Exam Pattern for General Awareness

The section is designed to test the general knowledge of the applicant. It will have questions to test aspirant’s awareness of ongoing, current events in various fields around the world. Generally, about 20 questions are asked in this section.

AFCAT 2018 Exam Pattern for Verbal Ability in English

As the name of the section suggests, this segment will assess the student’s knowledge, proficiency and comprehension in English language. The total number of questions asked from this section will be approximately 30.

AFCAT 2018 Exam Pattern for Quantitative Ability

This section will test the basic mathematical ability of participants. Around 15 questions will be asked from this section. It is considered to be a relatively scoring section though the level of difficulty for this section is moderate to high.

AFCAT 2018 Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test

This section is the most important segment as maximum questions are asked in this section. Candidate’s mental and military aptitude is tested. The difficulty level is moderate and approximately 35 questions are asked from this section.

AFCAT 2018 Marking Scheme

Students must ensure that they know the marking scheme in order to decide how to attempt the questions in the entrance test. There has been no change in the marking scheme of AFCAT 2018 and it is the same as it was for the year 2017. Individuals must note that negative marking will be applicable for the test. The marking scheme is given as follows:

  • +3 marks will be awarded to participants for marking every accurate answer.
  • A penalty of marks will be charged for marking wrong or incorrect answers i.e. negative marking will be applicable. For every inaccurate answer, 1 mark will be deducted from the total score of aspirants.
  • Marks will not be deducted from the total score of the student for leaving a question blank or failure in attempting it.
  • The darkening of two bubbles on the OMR sheet will be considered as a wrong answer and negative marking will be applicable accordingly.

AFCAT 2018 Exam Syllabus

The syllabus for AFCAT 2018 will be based on 10+2 or higher secondary school level knowledge. It will be as decided by IAF for every section. Candidates must make sure that they follow the right syllabus to prepare well for the exam. The section wise syllabus is given as follows:

Part 1: General Awareness

 The aim of this section is to determine the general thought process of the participants. It will assess aspirant’s awareness in current events. The main topics along for this section are given below:

Part 2: Verbal Ability in English

This section has questions that will test the grasp an applicant has on the English language. The aspirant’s vocabulary, grammar and verbal ability will be evaluated in this section. The important topics for this section are:

  • Fill in the blanks by choosing the appropriate word
  • Error Detection
  • Sentence Completion
  • Synonyms and Antonyms
  • Testing of Vocabulary
  • Tenses
  • Basic Grammar

Part 3: Numerical Ability

 In this segment, the aspirant’s ability to solve numerical problems with speed and accuracy is evaluated. It will include questions to assess how participants can work with numbers, do quick calculations and understand various arithmetic questions. They ought to have a good understanding of basic mathematical concepts to fare well in this section. The important topics for this section are as follows:

Part 4: Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test

AFCAT 2018 Important Instructions

It is the responsibility of all the applicants to ensure that they follow some rules and regulations formulated by the organizing body to maintain the decorum of AFCAT 2018 exam hall so that the examination proceeds properly.

  • Candidates appearing in AFCAT 2018 will have to report to their allotted exam center as early as 30 minutes before the commencement of exam.
  • According to the instructions by IAF, aspirants will not be permitted to carry any irrelevant documents to their respective center other than AFCAT 2018 Admit Card, an identity proof and blue/ black ball-point pen.
  • Items like calculator, logarithm table, slide rulers, Bluetooth devices, mobile phones, chits of paper etc. are forbidden and will not be allowed inside the exam centre.
  • OMR answer sheets will be evaluated electronically hence it is mandatory for all candidates to write and bubble the particulars (Name, AFCAT 2018 roll number and DOB) and booklet series in the OMR sheet in the space provided. Improper darkening of the bubbles and writing of the same shall lead to non-evaluation of the answer sheet.
  • Individuals will be able to attempt the questions in any order they want as there is no sectional time limit.
  • They will be advised to open the AFCAT 2018 question paper only when the invigilator instructs to do so.
  • Participants must approach the Center Superintendent/ Invigilator in the room if they require any technical assistance, first aid emergency or any information regarding the entrance exam.
